I recently came upon some ancient color slides that my older brother had taken at some Formula One and Can-Am races back in the day, which is to say circa 1970.
Hidden among images of cars whizzing around the track – some of which were actually in focus – there were some truly amazing pictures of the drivers. Amazing as in close up and personal. They included, among others, Jackie Stewart wearing his famous “mod” cap, Ferrari “rain master” Jackie Ickx, Denny Hulme and the debonair Graham Hill, whom he had snapped at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Acquaintance Number One is an early-20s car shopper who drives a four-year-old compact. “What do you think of this one?” she eagerly asked while showing me an image on her tablet. “I don’t think it’s the right car for you. It’s their own fault it has come to this. “But this new noise law affects all riders who want to enjoy their motorcycles, not just the loud ones!” Uhhh, say what? What does deafening noise have to do with “enjoying” a motorcycle? I know I don’t enjoy it. And how can it affect the non-noisy riders? That makes no sense. “Talk about a law for the minority!”
