What is Auto Edit?

Welcome to AutoEdit, a new and slightly more irreverent weekly feature from Wheelbase Media.
Rather than your pages being a collection of random auto stories, the AutoEdit feature is intended to be the glue that holds it all together. Just as your editorial page is intended to be the pulse of your newspaper, Auto Edit can also be the pulse of your auto pages.

Auto edit runs 500-550 words and is all about your readers becoming more familiar with our key staff members via their personal views on the automotive world. Of all 18 of our weekly features, AutoEdit is the only one intended to provide weekly commentary. Journalistically speaking, this is just common sense since such commentary does not belong in our other news-type features.

Whether your readers agree or disagree with what’s written, they’ll know exactly how the writers of AutoEdit stand on their chosen topics. And, quite frankly, a little spirited debate is a healthy thing and that seems to be missing from more and more newspapers these days. AutoEdit is all about soul, getting back to the basics of solid content and showing readers that there are real people behind the nine-point typeface.

Story Intro

“I have some tools in my van if you need them.”
Susan was heading over to see what was up with my stranded 1955 Chevrolet Two-Ten.
My beloved old crock, nicknamed Shrek because of its ogre-green color and sheer bulk, had been running great all day until it abruptly sputtered and died at the side of the road. My suspicion was that I had run it out of fuel, but since the gas gauge wasn’t working I couldn’t tell for sure.

Story Intro

In the car world, there’s the term “Eco” that many automakers have glommed on to. Their cars have “Eco” lights on their dashboards, their engines are called “Ecotec” and “Ecoboost” and some even have little green swatches worked into their shiny logos.
That’s the marketing departments at work playing to the trends, but the term “Eco” does not mean that “this thing is saving the planet.” But that’s what “Eco” might make you think.

There are only a couple of downsides to the average road map relative to modern GPS: you have to pull the car over to read one; and folding it back up. The benefits far outweigh any disadvantages. Don’t burn them just yet. Call me old-fashioned, a Luddite, or any other not-quite-with-the-times word or phrase you can conjure up. When it comes to finding my way through unfamiliar territory, I’ll take an actual roadmap over satellite navigation any day of the week.

Story Intro

Simply put, hydrogen is converted to electricity to power an electric car. It’s carried in a tank and a “fuel cell” converts the hydrogen to electricity through a chemical process. Similar technology has been used to create electricity during space travel, so it’s really not all that new. Electricity is created as you drive, which takes care of two of the biggest problems with current battery-electric cars: time waiting for it to charge; and battery range. As long as there’s hydrogen in the tank, you’re moving.

Story Intro

As you’re probably aware, within the borders of England (and Japan and Australia), you’ll be driving on the left-hand-side of the road from the right-hand-side of the vehicle.
Or, as we like to say, on the wrong side of the road from the wrong side of the vehicle, with the shifter in the wrong hand. What could go more wrong than that.
Well, for first-timers, the initiation can be a harrowing experience and even deadly.

I’m not much different than other people with a 2.5-car garage. Usually what happens is that you’re in hurry to get something done and you’ll pull out some tools or boxes that never seem to find their way back to their spots. Everything migrates from shelves and drawers onto the work benches and the floor, scattered around the cars in small piles.
Jason, a car-loving new dad, and one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet, was subtle about it.

Story Intro

A friend and I recently listed all of the vehicles that we’ve owned from the time we were teenagers right up to the present day, which for both of us stretches some four-and-a-half decades.
Since my buddy is not a total gearhead, his list was a relatively short, comprised of no more than about 10 cars. My compendium more than doubled his, which surprised me as I had never previously tallied them up. I even left out a number of cars that were acquired to quench my thirst for muscle cars and other collectibles that fall within the hobby-car category.

It really is the end of an era and one that I’m grateful is over and done with. I’m not talking about the disco era, but one that is just as annoying: the Era of Having to Tinker with your Car.
Oh, I know what you’re thinking. It’s a grand conspiracy to make cars so complicated that you risk electrocution if you even look at the engine the wrong way – or even try to find it – and you therefore have no choice but to take it to the shop if something needs tending to.

Story Intro

As a youngster, I was brought up on drag racing and everyone knew that automatic-transmission cars were more consistent and generally quicker than cars with manual transmissions. So why would I want to learn to drive a stick?
I was about 20 years old when I switched from having mere winter beaters to a regular 12-months-of-the-year car that was thrifty and practical. At least that’s what my then-future wife had me believing was important.
