What is Auto Edit?

Welcome to AutoEdit, a new and slightly more irreverent weekly feature from Wheelbase Media.
Rather than your pages being a collection of random auto stories, the AutoEdit feature is intended to be the glue that holds it all together. Just as your editorial page is intended to be the pulse of your newspaper, Auto Edit can also be the pulse of your auto pages.

Auto edit runs 500-550 words and is all about your readers becoming more familiar with our key staff members via their personal views on the automotive world. Of all 18 of our weekly features, AutoEdit is the only one intended to provide weekly commentary. Journalistically speaking, this is just common sense since such commentary does not belong in our other news-type features.

Whether your readers agree or disagree with what’s written, they’ll know exactly how the writers of AutoEdit stand on their chosen topics. And, quite frankly, a little spirited debate is a healthy thing and that seems to be missing from more and more newspapers these days. AutoEdit is all about soul, getting back to the basics of solid content and showing readers that there are real people behind the nine-point typeface.

Story Intro

Air bags, roll-over protection, crumple zones and side-impact door beams. It’s safety equipment to help you survive a crash. It’s all standard now, but it didn’t used to be, which is progress.
None of that helps people stay out of crashes in the first place, which should be a higher priority. To that end, emergency-braking technology will be mandated as standard equipment in all cars by 2022. This is progress. Big progress. It’s the only piece of new technology that has the potential for preventing most rear-end collisions, which are the most common kinds of crashes.

Story Intro

When I was a teenager, I had was hit head-on by a drunk driver. Fortunately, it was a fairly low-speed collision, but it still took all of my strength to keep from smashing my head against the steering wheel. Although the force of the impact lifted my body off the seat and my head made contact with the headliner, my only injury was a leg cramp from trying to push the brake pedal through the floor. When my dad purchased the five-year-old family sedan I was driving, seat belts were optional and his car didn’t include them.

It was sort of a horrifying ritual when I was growing up. Vehicles weren’t particularly durable, which meant that if you liked a car and wanted it to actually last, you pulled it off the road when the weather turned cold and resorted to the “winter beater.” It’s less common now because vehicles are much better and are built for four seasons. Just a few weeks ago, I was plowing through a raging blizzard in a six-figure Audi S8 test car. All-wheel-drive, fantastic winter tires, satellite radio and the cabin set at a balmy 75 F.

Story Intro

I have one of those jobs where I get to drive all kinds of cars and then tell people about them. So far in February, there has been the new Honda Civic (why is there a huge ‘Turbo” decal in front of the rear wheel?), the Infiniti QX50 (strange proportions and an old interior, but it drives well) and the Cadillac CTS (it took a week to get the seating position figured out). This neverending revolving door of new vehicles gives me a slightly different perspective than the average person, even when it comes to used cars.

News that Toyota is killing the Scion brand might come as a shock to some people, but for anyone paying attention, the decision was almost expected. Regardless, it’s disappointing because if you can see it happening, it’s preventable. Scion was an experiment to tap into new markets, beginning in 2004 with a couple of fun and funky small wagons: the xB; and the xD. Both were sold in Japan under different names and arrived here with only minimal alterations. They were intended to intrigue younger buyers, a group that typically wasn’t attracted to anything Toyota.

As a kid, I loved music. I think I was about 5 when mom discovered me belting out what may well have been the first song I ever, ummm . . . wrote.
Somehow I had made up some words to go along with Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. As you may know, there are no actual lyrics. It’s instrumental music, but that didn’t stop me from howling, “when will be toniiiiiiiight,” at the top of my lungs along with Herb’s horn section. I would later use the word “precocious” to describe it.

I used to be a pretty smart fella about NASCAR. I knew the drivers and the numbers and who drove a Ford or Chevy or a Dodge. That kind of thing. No matter what, I would never miss watching the season-opening Daytona 500 in February. Honestly, though, I haven’t felt all that connected to the series in a number of years. Of course, I’m leaving out the “why,” because it’s a story that I don’t tell very often, mostly because it comes from a dark place.

It takes years, maybe even decades, to build a successful brand. So when that finally happens, what do some companies do? Throw it all out and start with a new name? That would be insane, right? But that’s what Ford did when it dumped the famous Taurus for the Five Hundred a decade ago, only to have new boss Alan Mulally swoop in to reverse the error.
Not everyone learned the lesson, though.

From past columns, you’ll recall that I’m a big fan of diesel power.
In fact I recently wrapped up a review of the new Mercedes-Benz GLE that was equipped with the “M” sport package and the company’s six-cylinder turbo-diesel. I loved it. Great economy and an abundance of effortless power. And it doesn’t matter to me about the Volkswagen/Audi scandal, I would still plunk down money for a diesel. Whether it would be a VW diesel, I’m not sure.

Each year, numerous automotive publications announce their favorite picks. Virtually all are brand new or significantly revised models. In my case I’ve decided to honor some particular favorites of mine, not for their newness, but for their nine lives. Having stood the test of time, they continue to attract a solid following of buyers, year after model year. See if any of these 2016 new-old cars resonate with you:
