The film “Gone in 60 Seconds” didn’t spark actor Nicolas Cage’s love for cars, it was just an extension of that passion. “To combine film and cars, the two things I love most, was something there was no way to pass up,” said Cage in an interview with his fan Web site. In fact, Cage, who hobbies include racing, did much of the stunt driving behind the wheel of Eleanor, a movie clone of a 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT 500.

They don’t just call it a legend for just any old reason. The return of Chrysler’s “Hemi” engine in 2003 resurrected a blast from the past that began more than five decades ago. So named for its effective hemispherical (dome-shaped) combustion chambers, the “Hemi” was capable of ingesting huge volumes of air and fuel, essential for making high horsepower. During World War II, Chrysler’s 16-cylinder Hemi-headed engines were used to power fighter aircraft through the 500-mph barrier in level flight.

It was the early 1940’s and Bill France Sr., the eventual founder of NASCAR, was looking for a woman driver to attract more women spectators to his local track in South Carolina. Louise Smith had become legendary for outrunning the law in her hometown of Barnesville, Ga. And even though she had never set tire to a track, Smith finished third in her first race. “I was just born to be wild,” she once said.

In a career spanning more than 30 years, Mario Andretti has won virtually every world-class racing event and every major championship there was to be won. Andretti moved to the United States from Italy in 1955 and racing took hold. By 1964, at age 24, he had graduated to United States Auto Club (USAC)-Sponsored Champ (Indy) cars, a move that would, the following year, lead to his first of four championships. Andretti’s first crack at the Indianapolis 500 came in 1965 when he qualified fourth and finished third. Four years later, he won.
