Description

Sure, the Jeep Wrangler design seems a bit, ahem, rustic, but that’s a major part of the appeal. It’s just plain cool to drive or be seen in, even if their owners have no clue about the history and why looks and drives the way it does.
The original Jeep was certainly not designed as a status vehicle for the high school or college set, nor was it geared for recreational or sporting use by millions of outdoors types, or anyone else with an urge to venture off the main roads for some fun and frolic.

Description

The two sports cars parked side by side that September morning in Brescia, Italy, must have been a stirring sight. One was a legend, the other a thoroughly modern, high-tech namesake with aspirations of becoming a legend.
Just as he had done five years earlier, former Grand Prix driver Sir Stirling Moss climbed into his now classic Mercedes-Benz Sporty Light Racer (SLR), flipped a switch and brought the ancient beast to life.

Description

It took a brave person to drive an MG TC back in the 1940s. And perhaps crazy. But those hearty pioneers figuratively paved the way for the sports-car revolution that would eventually sweep the land, providing an alternative to Detroit’s overstuffed automotive appliances. The TC was a hard-riding relic that squatted so low to the ground it could barely be spotted in the rear-view mirrors of most other cars. It completely broke with the convention that dictated how an automobile should look and feel and how many people it should carry. But that was its charm.

Description

It wasn’t intended to be the ultimate recreational vehicle and it certainly wasn’t intended to be driven by movie stars as a symbol of Hollywood success.
How the battle-hardened Humvee military vehicle became the civilian-use Hummer H1 sport-utility vehicle might not make much sense, but it does make for an interesting story.
Designed for complete and utter off-road (or no-road) use, the Humvee’s purpose in life is to take troops into nearly any combat situation that isn’t bathing in five feet of water. Pavement? Don’t need it, don’t care.

Description

It’s hard to imagine that such an unsophisticated car by today’s standards could still be the basis of comparison for all other sports cars with almost none of them ever coming close to the sheer visceral standard set by the Ferrari F40.
Even its immediate successor, the 1995 F50, which many argued was better looking, had a tough time winning the same kind of praise commanded by the F40. Perhaps that’s the way Enzo would have wanted it.

Description

Although fans might think of the Mustang as a performance car, it was at first really an exercise in image. The performance came later.
One example, the very-limited-production Boss 302 was created first and foremost as a way to go racing.
With its thundering V8 hoofbeats, the Boss made a sound that was music to the ears of of Ford fans everywhere, but alarmed and intimidated the competition.

Description

With nearly every auto writer in the land begging to test Porsche’s new mid-engine marvel, we somehow managed to score a gorgeous 1997 Guards Red Boxster for a week’s worth of cruising along a portion of the view-rific Pacific Coast Highway that hugs the cliffs and shoreline between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Calif.
Sadly, that trip ended far too soon.

Despite producing only 22 examples between 1959 and 1961, the Birdcage is perhaps the best-known and most desirable of all the competition Maseratis ever built. One look at its offbeat construction and sensuous bodywork and it’s easy to see why.
Although the company, founded by the six Maserati brothers in the early part of the 20th century, was frequently in financial difficulties, it has, in it’s troubled life span, managed to produce a number of significant low-volume, high-priced classics.

Imagine what the public thought when the Volvo 144 sedan was unveiled back in the 1960s.
Up to that point, Volvo churned out sporty and rugged vehicles, but the 144’s arrival broadened the manufacturer’s focus to include cars that combined roominess and leading-edge passenger safety, which is the same philosophy that was built into most Volvos that came after.
