Story Intro

If you think that a tiny turbo engine reduces the Mustang to poser status, you’re in for a big surprise. Ford has reworked the engine so that it puts out 350 pound-feet of torque at 3,000 rpm, or 30 more pound-feet than the 2017 version. The horsepower rating remains unchanged at 310. Putting those numbers into perspective, the now-banished V-6 was rated at 300 horses and 280 pound-feet at 4,000 rpm.

Story Intro

The name given to Nissan’s new small wagon broadly hints at the intended demographic. Kicks is urban slang for a cool pair of running shoes, but in this case it’s also about having fun.
In many respects, the Kicks becomes the replacement for the funky 2011-’17 Juke. That oddity of a car never really caught on with younger or older buyers, despite being a gutsy little beast that drove better than it looked.

Story Intro

In case you missed the memo, automakers have locked on to the latest Big Thing, which is to create off-road-capable versions of their midsize and full-size pickups. In this group, the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 (one size down from the Silverado) is a serious piece of sporting gear.  The Ford F-150 SVT Raptor that arrived for 2010 (now simply called Raptor) is the inspirational model for the ZR2, as it was for the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro and Fiat Chrysler’s Ram Rebel. The upcoming 2019 Ford Ranger is also slated for the full-on Raptor treatment.

Story Intro

The Discovery’s mostly aluminum unitized structure integrates the body panels, floor, firewall and roof, replacing the LR4’s hefty body-on-frame construction. The result is a weight reduction of about 1,000 pounds (to about 4,750), despite being slightly larger overall. The base supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 makes 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. Optional is a 3.0-liter V-6 turbo-diesel rated at 254 horsepower and 443 pound-feet.

Story Intro

The 2019 Ram 1500 (now on sale) has plenty going for it in terms of looks, features, comfort, performance and towing-and- hauling work ethic. In other words, everything that light-duty truck operators treasure most.
The most noticeable change is at the front where there’s a new grille, aluminum hood, and a more raked windshield that increases the Ram’s aerodynamics.

Story Intro

It’s uncommon for any luxury nameplate to remain essentially unchanged for more than a decade, but in the Infiniti QX50’s case, the wait appears to we worth it. The new 2019 five-passenger utility wagon, now on sale, has a new platform, new sheetmetal and what’s considered to be one of the most technologically advanced internal-combustion engines on the market.

What is Auto Edit?

Welcome to AutoEdit, a new and slightly more irreverent weekly feature from Wheelbase Media.
Rather than your pages being a collection of random auto stories, the AutoEdit feature is intended to be the glue that holds it all together. Just as your editorial page is intended to be the pulse of your newspaper, Auto Edit can also be the pulse of your auto pages.

Auto edit runs 500-550 words and is all about your readers becoming more familiar with our key staff members via their personal views on the automotive world. Of all 18 of our weekly features, AutoEdit is the only one intended to provide weekly commentary. Journalistically speaking, this is just common sense since such commentary does not belong in our other news-type features.

Whether your readers agree or disagree with what’s written, they’ll know exactly how the writers of AutoEdit stand on their chosen topics. And, quite frankly, a little spirited debate is a healthy thing and that seems to be missing from more and more newspapers these days. AutoEdit is all about soul, getting back to the basics of solid content and showing readers that there are real people behind the nine-point typeface.

Story Intro

Grand-touring sedans with punch and optional all-wheel-drive tend to come from Germany- or Japan-based luxury automakers, but the latest contender is from, wait for it, Kia from Korea.
This Hyundai division is really living up to its ‘The Power to Surprise’ slogan with the new Stinger. The hatchback sedan is the third large-size passenger car in the automaker’s stable and is sold alongside the Cadenza and K900.

Story Intro

It’s not a stop-the-presses deal, but the launch of a new-generation Jeep Wrangler is worthy of celebration.
Much of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ fortunes rests on the shoulders of the Ram truck and Jeep lines, but it’s Jeep that has captivated buyers for decades. Throughout numerous design and designation changes dating back to the 1940s, the Wrangler has retained a recognizable shape. It has also been built at the same Ohio-state assembly plant for the past 75 years.

Story Intro

The 2018 Regal holds fast to the original name, but the car’s hatchback body is so radically different from the previous sedan shape that it gets a new name: Regal Sportback.  With the ongoing shift to tall wagons from sedans, moving the Regal to a hatchback format could prove to be one of Buick’s smarter moves. And the fact that the car still exhibits a four-door-sedan appearance could also work in Buick’s favor with buyers who remain steadfastly averse to the look of a typical hatchback.

Story Intro

In rapid succession, General Motors has recreated virtually its entire line of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac utility vehicles, giving them more style, safety content and performance. The GMC Terrain was one of the beneficiaries of GM’s clean-slate revival and the result is singularly impressive.  The newly launched second generation of the brand’s least-expensive model has nothing in common with the original, in a good way.
