What is Auto Edit?

Welcome to AutoEdit, a new and slightly more irreverent weekly feature from Wheelbase Media.
Rather than your pages being a collection of random auto stories, the AutoEdit feature is intended to be the glue that holds it all together. Just as your editorial page is intended to be the pulse of your newspaper, Auto Edit can also be the pulse of your auto pages.

Auto edit runs 500-550 words and is all about your readers becoming more familiar with our key staff members via their personal views on the automotive world. Of all 18 of our weekly features, AutoEdit is the only one intended to provide weekly commentary. Journalistically speaking, this is just common sense since such commentary does not belong in our other news-type features.

Whether your readers agree or disagree with what’s written, they’ll know exactly how the writers of AutoEdit stand on their chosen topics. And, quite frankly, a little spirited debate is a healthy thing and that seems to be missing from more and more newspapers these days. AutoEdit is all about soul, getting back to the basics of solid content and showing readers that there are real people behind the nine-point typeface.

Story Intro

The idea was brilliant. Take a compact-car chassis, attach a boxy body, add a couple of rows of bench seats and sell it for cheap. Instantly, there’s a vehicle that can carry the entire gang and their gear, sips fuel and can fit inside your garage.
If you think I’m referring to the creation of Chrysler’s minivans, you would be only partially correct. I’m also talking about Volkswagen’s Beetle-based people mover, which was the vehicle that began the craze.

What questions am I asked the most?
“I’m buying a car. What’s good?”
The second question is, “You must have connections, can you get me a deal?” Most definitely “no” to that one, but the first one is worth some discussion. These types of calls and emails come at all hours of day. I might be working in the office or out with friends for dinner, but once someone finds out that I’m a “car guy,” the questions start coming about what I think is good and bad.

I run into people every day who think that it “must be nice” to be an automotive journalist. Prancing around in new cars without a care in the world, apparently, and unaware that other people, like them, have “real jobs” and real problems and real bills to pay.
Ohhhh, how lucky I am to have it as easy and glamourous as I do. Perhaps someone has that same misconception of you . . . that you don’t actually work.

Movies with auto-racing themes have been around since the industry began. With few exceptions, most recent efforts really haven’t been that great from acting and/or plot development perspectives, with the possible recent exception of “Rush” (the story of the rivalry between Formula One drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda).

By now you’ve heard of a little invention called the diesel engine. Since it has been around for more than a century, I wouldn’t be surprised if you knew a bit about the genius who invented it. You know, the tormented soul who eventually killed himself over it?
Wait. So, you hadn’t heard that Rudolf Diesel thought his invention was perfect? And that he couldn’t take criticism when others wanted to improve the design?

Mad Magazine’s fictitious, freckled Alfred E. Newman often exclaimed, “What, Me Worry?” That phrase should also apply to North American automakers that have been for years listening to claims from companies in China about launching their cars here.
This time it’s the Guangzhou Automobile Group Motor Co., or GAC, that claims it will come knocking on North America’s door starting in 2017.

Like many people, I have become a bit of a slave to the navigation screen, but it took a 10-day road trip to bang some common sense back into my head. That was after trusting the nav system to get me where I wanted to go. A map? Hey, who needs one when we have all this great technology right there in front of us? After wrestling for a bit with the functionality and trying to understand the system’s terminology, I was off, staring at the scenery, while every now and then glancing down at the arrow moving down a big orange line on the screen.

Story Intro

After the launch of the Lincoln Continental concept sedan, Bentley chief designer Luc Donckerwolke, apparently thinking that Lincoln pretty much copied the Bentley Continental Flying Spur, had an attack of righteous indignation.
To quote Donckerwolke, “This behavior is not respectable. Building a copy like this is giving a bad name to the car design world.” One his associates, Sangup Lee, further opined, “It is very disappointing, especially for an exclusive brand like Lincoln,”

For all that the new Malibu will be, it, like the Fusion, will not likely end up as what I would call a driving machine in the Audi sense, but rather a nice looking and roomy family car with the some pep from the optional 260-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder. And that’ll be good enough for the masses.
But is my desire for beauty, capability and price so unrealistic?

The news from Mercedes-Benz that it will introduce an honest-to-goodness pickup truck by the year 2020 stopped me dead in my tracks. It shouldn’t have. In fact, the only real surprise from this announcement should be that M-B wouldn’t commit to selling pickups in North America, concentrating instead on Europe, Latin America and Australia. In other words, countries where the market for mid- or full-size trucks hasn’t been usurped by Ford, General Motors and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (Ram).
