Description

Aside from acting, the one thing the Indiana-born Dean loved was racing. His interest for the sport began at the age of 18 in Fairmont, Ind., when his father bought him a 1939 Chevrolet. At the time, he had been riding motorcycles for a couple of years and was to eventually own and race several, including a Harley-Davidson, Norton, Indian, Lancia scooter and a Triumph.

Description

Earl’s development of the Buick Y-Job (the letter “Y” was used by the aircraft industry to denote a prototype) avoided outside interference from other GM departments as much as possible. The two-door convertible body was intended to sit on an existing Buick Century Chassis and run with a stock 320-cubic-inch inline eight-cylinder engine that produced 141 horsepower.

Use: Voted the best automotive news column available: you need it.

What it is: If you could have only one automotive feature, this should be it. At Wheelbase Communications, we’ve chosen to stay away from providing an automotive-news column until we could do it in a non-traditional way. And here it is: the Auto Sleuth. Our worldly gumshoe has his ear to the ground, digging up the latest news on everything from product launches and updates to names in the news. The column is solely driven by reader interest. No boring statistics or auto-company pap here, just the straight goods peppered with the Auto Sleuth’s commentary and speculative, gossipy-style.

Story Intro

Among Lincoln’s quartet of luxury-level tall wagons, the 2021 Corsair is the most compact, but it more than holds its own at the crossroads of style and technology.
For those unaware, the Corsair, which was new for 2020, replaced the MKC. With the recent and not entirely unsurprising retirements of the Continental and MKZ sedans for 2021, the Corsair assumes the entry-point position for the brand.

Description

He was a big man with an even bigger presence. A gentle giant. “BP” to most people who knew him.
I remember the first and only time I met Benny Parsons.
It was in a smoke-choked media room that was too small to handle the growing number of journalists who were descending upon Indianapolis, Ind., to cover the Brickyard 400 race.

GMC Acadia: 2007-’16

Description

The Acadia provided plenty of leg, knee and elbowroom for everyone, including adults seated in the third row. Entering and exiting the wagon was also fairly easy due to a lower ride height than similar models that were built on pickup-type full frames. Acadias that were equipped with all-wheel-drive earned nearly the same fuel-economy rating as the front-wheel-drive models. Versions fitted with second-row captain’s chairs (instead of a bench seat) were limited to seven passengers, but those in the middle row had additional room and comfort.

Description

Hopeful of attracting a broader clientele, Maserati management set its sights on the high-end sedan market. The idea of making a full-size motor carriage seemed to be a natural, since no other Italian manufacturer — certainly not Ferrari — was producing such a vehicle. At the time, the British were the dominant high-end European sedan generators with such offerings as Jaguar, Daimler, Rolls-Royce, Bentley plus a smattering of cottage-industry producers.

Story Intro

The vehicle squeezes between the smaller Soul (four inches shorter) and the larger and more mainstream Sportage (about seven inches longer).
Although it shares the Hyundai Kona platform (Kia is a division of Hyundai), the two models go their own ways in terms of styling. The rugged-looking Seltos has considerably more carrying capacity, too, whether the rear seat is upright or folded flat. The Seltos also shows more than a hint of commonality with the full-size Kia Telluride, including the “tiger nose” grille that fronts the rounded front bumper and hood.
