Description

Why do people who smile at each other passing on the sidewalk suddenly become adversarial behind the wheel of a car? Perhaps it’s the metal cocoon insulating them from reality? Lisa and I mind our own business – and our manners – on the road and have a good time. Sometimes I wonder if “cranky drivers” are just cranky people or do they change when they hit the road. Mild and meek folks strap on a couple of tons of sheet metal, plastic and technology and slip into a persona of power and greed with an attitude the road is theirs and every problem out there is the result of someone else’s stupidity.

Description

Could the red-hot market for vintage Ferraris finally be leveling off? Maybe, just maybe.
www.hagerty.com, which tracks vintage and collector-car prices, reported recently that its Hagerty Ferrari Index gained just one percent in value over the four-month period ending in May.
Writing for www.hagerty.com, collector-car expert Dave Kinney noted, “This is the lowest upward move since our 2006 inception date, and is in stark contrast to the 10-20 percent changes we recorded through much of 2013 and 2014 . . .

What is Auto Edit?

Welcome to AutoEdit, a new and slightly more irreverent weekly feature from Wheelbase Media.
Rather than your pages being a collection of random auto stories, the AutoEdit feature is intended to be the glue that holds it all together. Just as your editorial page is intended to be the pulse of your newspaper, Auto Edit can also be the pulse of your auto pages.

Auto edit runs 500-550 words and is all about your readers becoming more familiar with our key staff members via their personal views on the automotive world. Of all 18 of our weekly features, AutoEdit is the only one intended to provide weekly commentary. Journalistically speaking, this is just common sense since such commentary does not belong in our other news-type features.

Whether your readers agree or disagree with what’s written, they’ll know exactly how the writers of AutoEdit stand on their chosen topics. And, quite frankly, a little spirited debate is a healthy thing and that seems to be missing from more and more newspapers these days. AutoEdit is all about soul, getting back to the basics of solid content and showing readers that there are real people behind the nine-point typeface.

Story Intro

The idea was brilliant. Take a compact-car chassis, attach a boxy body, add a couple of rows of bench seats and sell it for cheap. Instantly, there’s a vehicle that can carry the entire gang and their gear, sips fuel and can fit inside your garage.
If you think I’m referring to the creation of Chrysler’s minivans, you would be only partially correct. I’m also talking about Volkswagen’s Beetle-based people mover, which was the vehicle that began the craze.

Story Intro

What questions am I asked the most?
“I’m buying a car. What’s good?”
The second question is, “You must have connections, can you get me a deal?” Most definitely “no” to that one, but the first one is worth some discussion. These types of calls and emails come at all hours of day. I might be working in the office or out with friends for dinner, but once someone finds out that I’m a “car guy,” the questions start coming about what I think is good and bad.

Generally speaking, if there’s a popular old car, there’s likely a club for it. Or in this case, a club for a popular man. There are dozens of regional clubs dedicated to Donald Healey and his creations.
For example, just slip a $65 check into an envelope, affix the proper postage and you’re part of the Ohio Valley Austin Healey Club. Your membership includes a magazine, newsletters and something much more intangible: Healey’s dream.
