Description

The Lincoln-Zephyr, a luxury car created to serve the needs of buyers whose economic circumstances had forced them to consider more modest forms of four-wheeled transportation. Edsel Ford, son of Henry Ford, had good reason to be concerned. Back in 1922, he had convinced his father to purchase Lincoln. As head of the division, it was Edsel’s job to bring in the cash, not a simple task considering the stock-market crash in late 1929.

The return of both General Motors’ trucks signals resurgence in what was a mostly dormant class, namely the mid-size pickup.
Retired, seemingly for good, after the 2012 model year, the Colorado/Canyon are back with a new global platform, more power and standard features plus, most importantly, greater hauling and towing capacities, which should interest those who use pickups for work and/or play.

Timothy “Tim” Flock was truly a NASCAR pioneer and a classic case study in hard living and fast driving.
He was a two-time stock-car champion who won 40 races. Yes, Flock was that good. In fact, he won 18 poles and 18 races during his 1955 Grand National championship season. His 21.1-percent career winning percentage is still one of the best in NASCAR history.”He was a cool customer,” said Richard Petty on an ESPN Classic SportsCentury special featuring Flock.

Is what’s parked in your driveway reflective of your lifestyle? Of course it is. Let’s take a little stroll back in time. The Rockabilly scene is a fashion and music subculture that is reflective of the 1950s. There was a major rebirth of the scene in the late ’60s and early ’70s. In the ’50s, as rock ‘n’ roll was becoming popular and there was also a type of music called hillbilly, which during that time was really just the name for country music. The Rockabilly movement was a hybrid of the two genres, hence its name.

What is Auto Edit?

Welcome to AutoEdit, a new and slightly more irreverent weekly feature from Wheelbase Media.
Rather than your pages being a collection of random auto stories, the AutoEdit feature is intended to be the glue that holds it all together. Just as your editorial page is intended to be the pulse of your newspaper, Auto Edit can also be the pulse of your auto pages.

Auto edit runs 500-550 words and is all about your readers becoming more familiar with our key staff members via their personal views on the automotive world. Of all 18 of our weekly features, AutoEdit is the only one intended to provide weekly commentary. Journalistically speaking, this is just common sense since such commentary does not belong in our other news-type features.

Whether your readers agree or disagree with what’s written, they’ll know exactly how the writers of AutoEdit stand on their chosen topics. And, quite frankly, a little spirited debate is a healthy thing and that seems to be missing from more and more newspapers these days. AutoEdit is all about soul, getting back to the basics of solid content and showing readers that there are real people behind the nine-point typeface.

Story Intro

The world is a much smaller place now than it was in 1980. Garry Sowerby says it was a little rougher back then, too. Setting out to break the around-the-world driving record – and shattering it by a month, taking just 74 days in a Volvo station wagon – there was no GPS, no cell phones or Google or Web sites to research the whole thing. Lots of phone calls and winging it at various sketchy border crossings.

When it works, putting twice the rubber on the road is a beautiful thing. The trick? Actually making it work.
I get all jazzed up about tires. Compounds. Styles. Aspect ratio and section width. I could go on for days and days. How much do I love tires? I have been known to pay more for a tire to get a better looking tread pattern.
Obviously, I have issues, but the biggest one might be relaying the art of sizing, here and now. . .

How much would the car drop in value if we trashed the original engine? No one wants to find out.
When you last read about the ’63 Corvette, we were armpits deep in camshaft selection, cylinder-head porting and block preparation. Lots of technical stuff.
The purpose of this story is not to show you how to rebuild an engine in 1,429 easy steps, but rather to highlight the experience we had after we got the whole thing together.

So much for experiments.
Sometimes they work out and sometimes you end up doing something completely different that costs three times as much money. Believe me, the latter would be my first choice, too, but when so close means it doesn’t work the way want it to, then sometimes going back to the drawing board is best. As awesome as our Mustang looked with all the tricks we performed to the rear suspension to get it sitting just right, it just didn’t perform.
