Description

The late 1970s was unquestionably one of the darkest periods in American cultural, political and automotive history. Think about it: The two most popular forms of music in the late 1970s were blaring disco and bad corporate rock. The well-meaning but utterly ineffectual Jimmy Carter was in the White House, Iran held American hostages and there were long lines and high prices at the gas stations. The domestic U.S. auto industry was in a shambles, too, with bad designs, minimal quality control and severely choked horsepower.

What is Auto Edit?

Welcome to AutoEdit, a new and slightly more irreverent weekly feature from Wheelbase Media.
Rather than your pages being a collection of random auto stories, the AutoEdit feature is intended to be the glue that holds it all together. Just as your editorial page is intended to be the pulse of your newspaper, Auto Edit can also be the pulse of your auto pages.

Auto edit runs 500-550 words and is all about your readers becoming more familiar with our key staff members via their personal views on the automotive world. Of all 18 of our weekly features, AutoEdit is the only one intended to provide weekly commentary. Journalistically speaking, this is just common sense since such commentary does not belong in our other news-type features.

Whether your readers agree or disagree with what’s written, they’ll know exactly how the writers of AutoEdit stand on their chosen topics. And, quite frankly, a little spirited debate is a healthy thing and that seems to be missing from more and more newspapers these days. AutoEdit is all about soul, getting back to the basics of solid content and showing readers that there are real people behind the nine-point typeface.

News that Toyota is killing the Scion brand might come as a shock to some people, but for anyone paying attention, the decision was almost expected. Regardless, it’s disappointing because if you can see it happening, it’s preventable. Scion was an experiment to tap into new markets, beginning in 2004 with a couple of fun and funky small wagons: the xB; and the xD. Both were sold in Japan under different names and arrived here with only minimal alterations. They were intended to intrigue younger buyers, a group that typically wasn’t attracted to anything Toyota.

OK, allow me to rephrase that. In the privacy of your own home, with the lights off and with no one else watching, who’s willing to raise their hands because they don’t know what a Hemi is?
Of course with the lights off, I can’t see you, but if you don’t know what the word Hemi means, you’re hardly alone. Chrysler has spent years answering the question, “Does that have a Hemi?” but judging by the letters I get and the talk around the water cooler, the company still hasn’t spent enough time or ink telling anyone what a Hemi is and why they should want one.

Never underestimate the enduring appeal of the iconic Mini brand, in particular the 2016 Clubman. For a while it seemed that BMW’s junior division had jettisoned the Clubman for good; that it had been swept up in a general housecleaning that banished the two-seat Mini Coupe and Roadster after just four model-years. Also reportedly retiring is the Mini Paceman, which is a two-door offshoot of the Countryman. The thinning of the ranks is lamentable, but the Clubman wagon’s reintroduction is good news for Mini fans.

Description

Before to his death in 2008, Boyd Coddington was one of, if not the most influential custom-car builders of his time, with a unique and distinctive style that changed the business. Coddington loved to design cars that were long, low and swoopy and his bold creations remain some of the most sought-after customs of the modern era. One of his most striking early efforts was a 1948 Cadillac commissioned by rock band ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons. The outrageous “Cadzilla” firmly established Coddington as a top-flight builder who stretched the boundaries of conventional design.

Description

In 1962, Carroll Shelby envisioned building a lightweight roadster fitted with an American V8 engine. That vision became the Cobra sports car.
But the idea for such a machine was originally developed more than a decade before by Briggs Swift Cunningham II, a sporting enthusiast, a gentleman racer and a fearless competitor.
As heir to the family meat-packing fortune, Cunningham had the means to pursue practically any extracurricular endeavor he wished. Sports was his passion, and auto racing, in particular, consumed him.
