Description

Perhaps it’s the drama that I fall for almost every time when the needle on the fuel gauge merges with the letter ‘E’. Yes, I’m one of THOSE people. Then the needle crosses the ‘E’ and we watch and wait, breathlessly, as the needle sinks lower and lower, until we can’t stand the suspense any longer and fill the tank again (or put in $5 so we can repeat the drama all over again). What is Auto Edit?

Welcome to AutoEdit, a new and slightly more irreverent weekly feature from Wheelbase Media.
Rather than your pages being a collection of random auto stories, the AutoEdit feature is intended to be the glue that holds it all together. Just as your editorial page is intended to be the pulse of your newspaper, Auto Edit can also be the pulse of your auto pages.

Auto edit runs 500-550 words and is all about your readers becoming more familiar with our key staff members via their personal views on the automotive world. Of all 18 of our weekly features, AutoEdit is the only one intended to provide weekly commentary. Journalistically speaking, this is just common sense since such commentary does not belong in our other news-type features.

Air bags, roll-over protection, crumple zones and side-impact door beams. It’s safety equipment to help you survive a crash. It’s all standard now, but it didn’t used to be, which is progress.
None of that helps people stay out of crashes in the first place, which should be a higher priority. To that end, emergency-braking technology will be mandated as standard equipment in all cars by 2022. This is progress. Big progress. It’s the only piece of new technology that has the potential for preventing most rear-end collisions, which are the most common kinds of crashes.

No good deed goes unpunished. Case in point: Let’s go back to the middle of winter when I was sitting in the car with my boss. It was snowing . . . inside the car. All I was trying to do was make up for being late that morning. My boss worked the early morning shift, beginning at 4 a.m. and finishing around noon. He lived near me and I knew he took the bus. So, I offered a ride and he accepted. I should have seen it coming when I drove to the office that morning. It was particularly cold with a heavy snowfall. The windshield kept fogging over, and I finally had to pull over and wait for it to completely clear.
