Description

When people are willing to spend money on big cars, why try to sell them something smaller? The 1960s was an age where excess wasn’t actually seen as excessive, so the market for small and thrifty cars was indeed thin. And if an automaker didn’t build big cars, it was missing out on both sales and huge profits. Sleek and stylish, the redesigned American Motors Ambassador had everything going for it when it first appeared in 1965. As the company’s flagship fashion statement, the car seemed (on paper, at least) to be the equal of its Big Three competition.

Description

The shockwaves caused by the death of Dale Earnhardt 15 years ago rippled across the racing landscape faster than any of the 850 ponies under the hood of his racing machines could have ever carried him. ‘NASCAR has lost its greatest driver ever,’ then-chairman Bill France, Jr., said the evening of Feb. 18, 2001, after the on-track death of the circuit’s biggest star. Earnhardt, 49, died on the last lap of the season-opening Daytona 500 in Florida. In the short term, the NASCAR world was devastated, but in many ways Earnhardt’s death was not in vain.

What is Auto Edit?

Welcome to AutoEdit, a new and slightly more irreverent weekly feature from Wheelbase Media.
Rather than your pages being a collection of random auto stories, the AutoEdit feature is intended to be the glue that holds it all together. Just as your editorial page is intended to be the pulse of your newspaper, Auto Edit can also be the pulse of your auto pages.

Auto edit runs 500-550 words and is all about your readers becoming more familiar with our key staff members via their personal views on the automotive world. Of all 18 of our weekly features, AutoEdit is the only one intended to provide weekly commentary. Journalistically speaking, this is just common sense since such commentary does not belong in our other news-type features.

Whether your readers agree or disagree with what’s written, they’ll know exactly how the writers of AutoEdit stand on their chosen topics. And, quite frankly, a little spirited debate is a healthy thing and that seems to be missing from more and more newspapers these days. AutoEdit is all about soul, getting back to the basics of solid content and showing readers that there are real people behind the nine-point typeface.

You have to give Cadillac full marks for introducing a constant stream of new or reworked models to tempt us. We’re only part way into the 2016 model year and already this General Motors premium division has introduced two new 2017 vehicles. Joining the previously announced CT-6 flagship sedan is the XT5, a tall wagon that replaces for the SRX. ItÕs being built both in North America and in China. The five-passenger wagon shares virtually nothing with the outgoing rig, hence, presumably, the new name.

The Corvette without Zora Arkus-Duntov? Nope. America’s beloved sports car wouldn’t have happened the way it did, if at all. Although this engineer didn’t actually invent Chevrolet’s fiberglass two-seater, he was certainly responsible for turning it into the high-performance, highly desirable car it is today. Born in Belgium on Christmas Day, 1909, Arkus-Duntov spent his early years in Russia and Germany where he graduated with a degree in engineering in 1934. At the onset of World War II (1939-’45), both he and his brother Yura joined the French Air Force to fight advancing German forces.
