Description
In the gloriously sunny days in south Florida she was already flying. Literally, she was flying planes. But 16-year-old Janet Guthrie wanted more. She wanted to be an aviation engineer and an astronaut and for a time she was headed in that direction. She wanted to fix cars and build engines. And she did that, too. There was always something special deep inside the heart of a young girl with big dreams and endless ambition. There was a yearning to go faster and farther.

The moment is etched in time, like a tire track across the automotive landscape. The day Henry Ford found his way down a busy Detroit, Mich. street and into the Columbus Buggy Works building is the prelude, the climax and the denouement of automotive history, all rolled into one. It wasn’t the starting point; it was the turning point. And not only for an industry but a whole new century. Ford had one request for the unassuming clerk at the front counter: “I’m here to see Harvey Firestone,” he said. It was 1895.

It is perhaps the oxymoron of all oxymorons that you have die to become immortal. That goes for painters, philosophers, singers and scientists. And actors. Especially actors. Perhaps the most celebrated deceased actor, and one who has influenced more generations of young adults than just about any other cult hero, is James Byron Dean.
Dean’s flame was but a brief flicker upon the cinematic landscape. With only three feature-length movies under his belt (two released after his death), his star was still rising.

The Corvette without Zora Arkus-Duntov? Nope. America’s beloved sports car wouldn’t have happened the way it did, if at all. Although this engineer didn’t actually invent Chevrolet’s fiberglass two-seater, he was certainly responsible for turning it into the high-performance, highly desirable car it is today. Born in Belgium on Christmas Day, 1909, Arkus-Duntov spent his early years in Russia and Germany where he graduated with a degree in engineering in 1934. At the onset of World War II (1939-’45), both he and his brother Yura joined the French Air Force to fight advancing German forces.

In 100 years, would you want to be remembered for just one thing in your life? One career, or one accomplishment? Maybe one misfortune? Unfortunately, that’s how history works.
Herbert Austin is remembered for his life building a car company, but there was so much more to the man, like every other man. In Austin’s case, however, he is actually remembered for more.
His philanthropic efforts made him a Baron. His services in a world war led to his knighting. His idea that a three-wheel vehicle would be a perfect form of transportation made him one of the world’s first automotive legends.

It is virtually unthinkable in today’s mega-buck world of specialized Formula One open-wheel auto racing that any of its drivers could launch his own race team. And design and compete in his very own car. Bruce McLaren not only accomplished this feat more than four decades ago, but the company he founded continues to be one of the more successful organizations in Formula One. This despite the fact that its founder died in 1970 at the tender age of 32.

Walking the grounds of the dusty county fair, glitzy car show and dirty drag strips that dotted the landscape of Southern California in the late 1950s, one thing was apparent: people were lined up to see someone. But Ed Roth couldn’t fathom what all the fuss was about.
He spent a lifetime trying to understand why so many people loved what he did. He racked his brain to figure out why they adored his creations and chased him all over the nation, watching him do what he did.

Warren Avis landed at airports across the United States and waited . . . and waited . . . and waited. Sometimes he would have to walk for miles from the airport terminal before he would find a ride to pick him up. Airport ground transportation? Unthinkable. Rental car companies? Never heard of ’em. And if you wonder how Avis, the man, created Avis, the car-rental giant, you only need to look back to the early 1940s to see one frustrated man with a brilliant idea. Captain Warren Avis, a military pilot in World War II, knew something about air travel and he knew something about cars.

Even after all the near-death close calls, the catastrophic fires and the many friends who died doing the exact same thing with a 5,000-horsepower car, it still wasn’t easy to hang up the helmet and gloves. At some point, she said, though, the ride had to find an end. The green lights couldn’t always mean go. The quarter mile couldn’t roll on forever. But would it really surprise anyone if Shirley Muldowney, the little girl from upstate New York who grew up to become an icon, a legend, a mover and a shaker, decided to hammer that engine a little longer?
After all, Shirley was only 62 at the time.

Description
A design-studio owner who never designed any cars? How ironic. One historian described him as someone who “oozed urban affluence, a short and foxy-faced man with a penchant for sharp tailoring and sunglasses.” Look at the old photos today, nearly 20 years after his death in 1997 at age 82, and you can still see the style, the confidence and the eye for talent.
But, then, that might have been Giuseppe “Nuccio” Bertone’s greatest asset: his eyes.
