Was it a coincidence that his death came during the world’s largest show of sparkling speed and automotive artistry?
It was the fifth of November, a Thursday during the 2015 Specialty Equipment Market Assn. show – the SEMA Show – in Las Vegas, Nev. It’s a place where hundreds of the best custom cars in North America converge to celebrate the very thing he stood for, a place where businesses order massive quantities of speed parts, tools, wheels, gadgets and even car wax, and a place where Barris’s most famous creation – the original Batmobile – would often appear.

Those who knew him remember that he was always easy to spot in the garage. Shorter than expected. Movie star thin. Blue eyes searing the darkness of the garage. And always accessible.
Newman began racing after starring in “Winning”, a 1969 movie about Indy-style oval-track, open-wheel racing. He loved the taste of a race course and the smell of ethanol. He took to road racing on long tracks where he could use his skill on left and right turns.

Description
The 11-year-old girl with the dark eyes, long neck and brown hair couldn’t possibly have imagined the reality or the gravity of her father’s actions.
Could she have imagined that her name would be repeated in casual conversation for 100 years or more? Could she have imagined that her name would be associated with so many things to so many people: style; class; sophistication; power and influence?

Modena, Italy, is to Europe what Indianapolis is to the United States.
Legends? They were born in Modena. Ferrari is just down the road. So is Maserati and Lamborghini. Even the local Fiat dealer used to make his own race cars, just for fun.
Modena doesn’t just mean motors, it means the spirit of driving, the road and car becoming one. Today, the dreams of designers still come to life at 100 mph around bends and dips that challenge the world’s best drivers.

Why look up the definition of “trial by fire,” or “sink or swim” when you can just read this story.
Henry Ford II, with little knowledge of running a car company, stepped in after his father’s death and probably saved Ford. How? He knew how to hire the right people and he could make decisions.
Talented, tenacious and born with an acid tongue, “Hank the Deuce,” as the auto press once labeled him, might never have set an assembly line in motion or turned the crank on an engine, but he was just as influential for both.

In the world of iconic designs, there are those who blaze trails, and then there are those who set the trails ablaze.
Herlitz was the latter. Instrumental in the final design of the Plymouth Barracuda and the early 1970s Plymouth Road Runner, Herlitz rose to be one of the most influential designers in Chrysler’s long history of interesting products. He had a passion, a flair and an ability to shake off negative reactions and then do so much more.

Bohlin wasn’t physically in Akron the day the National Inventors Hall of Fame added his name to the long lost of other inventors who had changed society. In a strange and unfortunate twist of fate, he died of a heart attack that very day some 3,000 miles away in Ramfall, Sweden. He was 82.
“But his seat belt is everywhere,” a hall of fame spokesman said on the day of the induction, which was attended instead by his two sons.

When you need electrical work done, you call in a professional. When you need legal work done, you find a lawyer. And when you need cool movie cars built, you call this guy.
Like a magician pulling a rabbit from a hat, car creator Gene Winfield seemingly makes the impossible possible. And while creating automotive magic over a span of six decades is nothing short of amazing, unlike the magician, there’s no smoke, no mirrors and no slight of hand. Just plane old-fashioned hard work and relentless dedication.

During his heyday in the Roaring ’20s, Harry Miller-designed race cars were the finest and most successful anywhere, placing him at the absolute pinnacle of the sport.
Along with his inventive nature, the one thing Miller became noted for was his near-fanatical attention to detail. Everything he produced – from engine components, bodies, frames – even brake handles – was perfectly sculpted and expertly machined to the finest possible degree.

Stock-car racing has always been about the “good ol’ boys.” But what about the “good ol’ girls?”
What about the wild woman from Barnesville, Ga., who used to show her passion for driving fast by outrunning the police in her hometown? What about the woman who loved hanging it out there so much that she nearly broke every bone in her body . . . and was darn proud of it?
