After designing a highly successful Almanac for one of our daily-newspaper customers, we wondered if we could put together an automotive version. As a result, your new Auto Almanac contains trivia, concept-car spy info, auction notes and even games. All along the way, we invite readers to interact and submit their own ideas.

Mini Countryman: 2011-’16

Description

Unlike other Mini models, the Countryman could comfortably seat four adults in individual chairs, or five passengers in 2014-’16 models that came with a split-folding rear seat. There was also plenty of cargo space behind the front seats when the rears were folded flat. As with other Mini models, there was a moon-sized round pod that housed the speedometer and the infotainment screen.

Our worldly gumshoe has his ear to the ground, digging up the latest news on everything from product launches and updates to names in the news. The column is solely driven by reader interest. No boring statistics or auto-company pap here, just the straight goods peppered with the Auto Sleuth’s commentary and speculative, gossipy-style.

Story Intro

Over its 17 model years, the Chevrolet Equinox nameplate has garnered plenty of followers and sales. The third-generation model that arrived for 2017 keeps pace with the group leaders, including the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape, even though the Equinox’s choices under the hood are generally more limited. As in no hybrid option. That will change for 2024 as Chevrolet transitions the Equinox to an electric platform.

Honda Civic: 2016-’21

Description

The Civic sedan was sleek and comfortable with more than adequate space for four passengers, and five if you didn’t mind a tight squeeze in back. A flat floor and sizable trunk also made for agreeable long-distance travel. The base 158-horsepower four-cylinder engine worked particularly well with the smooth-shifting six-speed manual transmission. A continuously variable unit (CVT) was optional.
