So, what would you like to do to your car? The way to know is to stay in the loop and here’s how.
As we get closer to the end of our Mustang project, you might have become a little lost along the way.
Like, what was the point of this project in the first place? Of the three cars in this series, the 1965 Mustang is likely the most representative of what someone might have in their garage and could eventually accomplish as time and finances allow.

Even if a part has nothing to do with going faster, cornering harder or stopping better, that doesn’t mean it’s not high performance. We have this saying around the office, that if it doesn’t make the car perform better, we don’t put it on. I guess that’s really more of a statement of purpose than a hard-and-fast rule because sometimes parts are just too pretty to pass up. Or stylish.

Glossy, matte, black, gray or body color? A person could really lose sleep over this.
Everyone knows what color a silver car will be. Silver, I’m guessing. Our 1963 Corvette project will be Sebring Silver, in fact. But what about all those places you can’t see, like under the carpet, under the floor and even under the spare tire carrier? What color are they supposed to be?

Hey, just because someone has good taste in classic cars doesn’t make them a designer, right? So, it’s a bit hit and miss, which is why if there’s a direction to err in, it’s probably on the side of subtlety, and that’s exactly where we’re at with our 1965 Mustang 2+2. Subtlety.
The theme (the big “A”) was more of a question: what if our 1965 Mustang actually arrived for 2005?

The Corvette side glass is ridiculously simple and simple to install (most side glass is). It’s flat as a pancake with no mounting holes. We ordered the windshield with the tinted strip across the top to cut the glare a bit as we do actually want to cruise the car a bit. With new front and side glass, the 1963 Corvette really does look like it came out of a time capsule. Several small dings were removed from the stainless-steel trim, which was then polished.

Dialing in new gauges that are both functional and matching. Gauges are gauges, so why bother with the hassle of replacing them. That’s what most of us think. I mean, is there really anything wrong with the stock instrumentation of a car? Not likely . . . if the car stays stock. But for any vehicle that’s modified and requires more information – and more accurate information – an upgrade just might be in the cards.

To go with fuel injection or stick with a carburetor, that IS the question.
My personal belief is that absolutely everyone would go with fuel injection in an aftermarket situation if it weren’t for two issues: price; and complexity. Are we crazy? That’s a fair question as it’s sort of THE question, and the point of this story.

Just as much prep goes on inside the paint booth as does outside. It’s the cleanest room in the body shop, it has the best lighting and has a huge air exchanger to keep it clean in there.
We did a lot of the masking outside of the booth – the windows and under the hood – and left the lower areas for inside the booth since the Corvette really couldn’t be moved once it was fully taped.

Is there anything that can date an interior more than the stereo system?
We all know what dates a car on the outside: big murals of dragons and skulls with smoke pouring out the nostrils; jacked-up rear ends; white-letter tires sticking out past the fenders; giant scoops the driver can’t see over; and sidepipes. And then there’s the wheels. Ugh.
