Description

It wasn’t glamorous, but it was the beginning of the domestic compact-car category. What was Chevrolet going to do about all the small cars gaining tracton in the marketplace back in the 1960s? Build its own, of course.
Throughout its 17-year production life, the Chevy II became known for its variety of power choices ranging from tame to torrid. That was definitely not in the cards back in 1959 when the car was just a sketch on a designer’s easel.

Description

I should have tried to save my badly smacked-up 544 sedan, but there was no rational thought after the altercation with the 1968 Chrysler New Yorker. The driver had made a sudden left turn in front of me and in an instant I had not only lost my trusty steed, but one of the most impressive and enjoyable cars I have ever owned. The attending police officer suspected the distinguished-looking gent who perpetrated the illegal turn had probably been drinking. But this was back in the pre-breathalyzer days of the early 1970s, so the driver’s degree of intoxication was uncertain.

Description

Weighing in at just over 3,000 pounds, it was much lighter than the Camaro, thanks to its unitized body construction (no frame). And with a 275-horsepower 340-cubic-inch V8, a four-speed manual transmission and deep 3.91:1 rear axle gears, you had a car capable of humiliating nearly everything short of the top-shelf, high-dollar musclecars. That this feat was achieved with such a mild engine (compared to similar engines of the day) was nothing short of amazing.

Description

The Z06 was defiantly built to win races and keep Chevy’s underground competition program alive. It looks just like any other 1963 Corvette coupe built, doesn’t it? A cursory look and you would never know that there was anything particularly exotic or meaningful about the Z06 designation. But for those in the know, the innocuous alpha-numeric code was actually assigned to a small group of factory-fresh 1963 Corvette coupes that had been specially prepared for racing duty.

Description

Where did the original two-seat sports car come from? You could debate that all day long, but England has always been considered the ancestral birthplace, and the Jaguar E-Type merely accentuates that point. Description

It was far from the most popular muscle car available back in the day, but the short-lived GSX was definitely one of the fastest street machines around. Pavement-pounding power wrapped in a sleek body barely begins to describe the Buick GSX. In fact, just about the only thing that could be considered slow about the car was it sales. In the GSX’s brief two years of existence in 1970 and ’71, the keys to fewer than 1,000 of these hairy beasts passed into the hands of buyers. However, those fortunate few were treated to the ride of their lives.
