Description

Remember Plymouth?
More than five decades ago, this basic-transportation Chrysler division needed some Fury behind it. By 1958, it was there . . . all 18 feet of fins and chrome.
Before 1956, Plymouth was the poor cousin in a lineup that consisted of high-end Chryslers and DeSotos as well as the more popular-priced Dodge coupes, sedans and station wagons. Plymouths were relegated to price-leader status, a way for the average breadwinner to buy a new car. . .

Description

Cadillac, Rolls-Royce, Bentley and maybe Duesenberg. When it comes to “classic luxury” makes, that’s about all that the average person can recite. But there are dozens of others.
Among the pioneering automobile companies of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Delahaye name is barely recognized.
However, when considering the sleekest and most desirable cars ever built, collectors and fans of classic cars regard Delahayes as some of the finest.

Description

Most imported small cars have managed to find some kind of following with buyers looking for economical and affordable transportation. The Subaru 360? Well, it just wasn’t one of them.
In hindsight, the Japanese-built two-door sedan was not well-suited to North American travel and if it hadn’t been for a budding entrepreneur, it never would have been sold here. The original importer was Malcolm Bricklin, an ambitious Philadelphia native who would eventually earn even greater infamy as the creator of the plastic-bodied Bricklin sports car.

Description

A car named after its gear shifter might seem like a silly idea, but it was pure marketing genius in the late 1960s.
Actually, the nearly 16,000 Hurst/Olds Cutlass models that were built over a two-decade span were much more. They were one of the first real signs of an aftermarket supplier joining with an automaker to enforce a market position and sell cars, a trend that became commonplace over the years.

Description

This NASCAR “car of yesterday” won on Sunday and didn’t sell on Monday. Serious devotees of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) are likely aware that it was the upstart Hornet that, in the early 1950s, helped solidify the sport’s rock-solid Southern U.S. fan base, laying the foundation for what would eventually become a continent-wide obsession.

Description

Shelby’s stamp is on many creations, but this just might be his most original.Few people could build cars Carroll Shelby’s lean and mean way. Take his original Cobra of the 1960s for example. His personal car, with 800 horsepower, once sold at auction for $5 million. Rare and powerful defines all Shelby vehicles and the Series 1 was no exception.

Description

“Win at any cost” was the battle cry adopted by the Ford Motor Company in the early 1960s as the company set out to show the world that it was better than Ferrari. Just as the GT40 competition cars had done in 1966 by winning the French 24 Hours of Le Mans – considered the race of all endurance races – the 1967 Ford Mark IV was created to further the effort and carry the company’s colors to the winner’s circle for a second straight season.

Description

No matter what we did, the 1953 Jaguar XK120 fixed-head coupe refused to fire up.
The then 17-year-old sports car wouldn’t run and the asking price had been reduced to just a few hundred dollars, not including the tow back to my friend’s parents house where it languished in the car port. My buddy knew nothing about repairing Jaguars, or any other vehicle for that matter. But we both considered the car’s sweeping front fenders, teardrop roofline and delicately finned grille to be a work of art.

Description

For those in the market for a pure-bred sports car four decades ago, the search likely began – and ended – with something imported from Italy. More specifically, appetites were whetted by the sights, sounds and smells of sleek two-seaters with their engines placed amidships as close as possible to the driver’s ears. Forget the radio, the symphonic noises created by these high-pitched overhead-cam engines straining for every available ounce of horsepower as they spun through the gears was music enough for any discerning and well-heeled enthusiast.

Description

Chrysler’s minivan might have struck with more ferocity in 1984, but Volkswagen got the wheels rolling decades earlier and for different reasons. With a minimum of horsepower, but a maximum of fun, reliability and adventure on a shoestring budget, Volkswagen’s boxy vans carted people to and from school, transported families on cross-country vacations and became the focal point for a generation of disaffected 1960s-era youth who shunned mainstream automobiles in favor of these rolling political and cultural icons.
