Description

Horsepower might have been the driving force of the 1960s, but conspicuous consumption pushed the 1970s to new physical limits. As the main example, just stand at the front corner of a 1970s Cadillac Eldorado and gaze — pretty much forever — down its long flanks and you’ll get the picture. There’s no end in sight and no boundaries that Cadillac wasn’t prepared to push.
The company was by no means dining all alone on a full refrigerator of parts. Plenty of Detroit iron, from Mustangs to Matadors, were gaining weight, growing soft around the middle Ñ and getting bigger Ñ just as the outputs of their smog-strangled engines began heading in the opposite direction.

Description

Colin Chapman produced some of the most innovative and ground-breaking sports cars around. Under his guidance, Lotus open-wheel Formula machines dominated international motorsports throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Much of the technology developed for competition also trickled down to his specialty sports cars that were produced in limited numbers. But for a man who lived on the cutting edge, it’s doubtful that Chapman, who died of a heart attack at age 54 in 1982, would have let the Esprit model plod on until 2003 . . . for a total of 27 years.

Description

From the earliest days of what would be called the “Pony car” era, the Plymouth Barracuda tried marching in lock-step with the iconic Ford Mustang.
Of course it didn’t come close to matching the Ford in sales, even though, technically, Plymouth’s Valiant-based “fish” was the first such vehicle to appear in public in the spring of 1964. But with each passing year, the Mustang marketing juggernaut grew stronger, even though the slower-selling Barracuda steadily improved in both style and in terms of unbridled muscle.

Description

Germany had no clue was about to hit it during that unseasonably warm fall afternoon in 1989. It was the second day of the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellun in the middle of industrial, ultra-chic Frankfurt. Big news was on the auto-show horizon. A beefy BMW was ready to be rolled out of the automaker’s lair, direct from Dingolfing, deep in the heart of the Black Forest.
With testing still in progress and with Bimmer executives unaware that demand would quickly outstrip supply, the BMW 850i took the main stage for the world press. You could have heard a pen drop.

Description

Imagine racing to Paris, France, from New York, N.Y., in mid-winter by crossing North America, Asia and Europe. Essentially, it’s an around-the-world trip.
This would be challenging enough in a modern passenger plane, but imagine that it’s February of 1908, and that you’re going to do it in a windowless open-air touring car across the frozen, wagon-rutted American landscape that, until then, fewer than 10 souls had previously driven (and none in winter).

Description

People will generally cheer on an underdog, but when push comes to shove, will they actually bet on one? When it came to the AMC Javelin, tens of thousands did exactly that, by signing in the dotted line. At the time, that probably seemed like a big gamble based on American Motors Corporation’s past effort at sportiness. The car was called the Marlin – referring to one of the toughest, sleekest and most difficult-to-catch trophy fish found in any ocean – but it was really a floundering fish, right from Day One.

Description

Overnight, quite literally, fins and excessive chrome belonged to a bygone era. That’s how important the arrival of the 1961 lincoln Continental was.
Until the day it launched, luxury cars were all about excess . . . especially chrome. Traditionally, they offered more size, more power, more standard features and, without a doubt, more digits (or larger ones) on their window stickers than all of their plebeian counterparts.

Description

It’s true that the GTO became the icon of the so-called Musclecar Era, but few know just how hard it was to make it all happen, except perhaps for one man who had to battle the establishment.
John Z. DeLorean, was, at the time, chief engineer of Pontiac. What he wanted was simple enough: a normally mild-mannered mid-sized sedan powered by a big V8.
The GTO concept developed in early 1963 when DeLorean, along with members of his engineering staff, were experimenting with the Tempest, an economy Pontiac introduced the previous year.

Description

Strands of DNA from the Porsche 356 can still be found in today’s 911-series that remains atop the wish list of anyone who yearns for speed and beauty.
For automobile enthusiasts the world over, the Porsche name has remained magical for more than 50 years. And those master magicians, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche and his son Ferry, are revered for taking their underpowered and ill-handling 1930s-era Volkswagen Beetle and creating a veritable legend: the Porsche 356.

Description

Today’s cars do a wonderful job of insulating their occupants from the great outdoors. How boring.
An MGB with the top down is the exact opposite of this, for better or worse. Mostly better.
The heady mix of leather, gasoline and motor oil, combined with whatever natural or man-made odors waft by your nostrils is a seductive automotive opiate. In this age of synthetic-laden interiors, bank vault passenger compartments and well dampened road/engine noises, cars such as the MGB are as out of step with the times as dancing the jitterbug at a Cold Play concert.
