What is Auto Edit?

Welcome to AutoEdit, a new and slightly more irreverent weekly feature from Wheelbase Media.
Rather than your pages being a collection of random auto stories, the AutoEdit feature is intended to be the glue that holds it all together. Just as your editorial page is intended to be the pulse of your newspaper, Auto Edit can also be the pulse of your auto pages.

Auto edit runs 500-550 words and is all about your readers becoming more familiar with our key staff members via their personal views on the automotive world. Of all 18 of our weekly features, AutoEdit is the only one intended to provide weekly commentary. Journalistically speaking, this is just common sense since such commentary does not belong in our other news-type features.

Whether your readers agree or disagree with what’s written, they’ll know exactly how the writers of AutoEdit stand on their chosen topics. And, quite frankly, a little spirited debate is a healthy thing and that seems to be missing from more and more newspapers these days. AutoEdit is all about soul, getting back to the basics of solid content and showing readers that there are real people behind the nine-point typeface.

Story Intro

Luxury cars tradtionally provide equal amounts of pampering and power. That axiom has not always been the case with Cadillac, but it is being rigorously applied to the brand’s V-series lineup, including the latest ATS-V coupe and sedan.
Both models launch this spring and go head-to-head for your dollars with similar offerings from BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

Story Intro

Is there room for one more small wagon? Honda sure thinks so and the new HR-V that launches this spring joins a lineup that’s already populated by the small-car Fit and the CR-V small tall wagon.
Think of the HR-V as the middle child in this trio. At 169 inches in length, it’s exactly halfway between the 178-inch CR-V and the 160-inch Fit. You can’t get more middle than that. The family resemblance ends when it comes to styling.

Story Intro

Toyota calls the Prius v wagon its “big Prius” because the car is built for carrying sizable loads while saving significant coin on fuel. The lower-case “v” (for versatility, apparently) is the largest of Toyota’s Prius fleet that includes the regular Prius and the subcompact Prius c hatchbacks. Together they form a hybrid juggernaut that, in marketing terms, is a “category killer” in that they crush all other competitors in the compact gasoline-electric segment.

Hey, where did all the station wagons go?
They’ve mostly been replaced by sport utility vehicles and so-called crossovers (tall wagons). You can still find traditional station wagons at BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Subaru and Volvo dealers. And, of course wherever Volkswagens are found, which is where you’ll discover the new Golf SportWagen. In Europe and elsewhere, wagons remain a popular niche.

Same body, but there’s enough going on underneath and inside to give this Acura some fresh ink. Luxury tall wagons come in many forms and the Acura MDX has consistently been a go-to, ever since the first one was launched about 15 years ago.
The MDX was all new for the 2014 model year, but that hasn’t stopped Honda’s premium division from making some significant alterations for the 2016 edition that’s now on sale. The updates don’t affect the MDX’s physical appearance, which is still relatively fresh.

Story Intro

Small hatchback wagons that can be ordered with all-wheel-drive are all the rage these days, and that’s what might give the new Fiat 500X a shot at stardom.
From an engineering perspective, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has developed a two-pronged approach that has the 500X and the Jeep division’s recently released 2015 Renegade sharing platforms and drivetrains. However where the littlest Jeep’s design is decidedly whimsical in nature, the 500X’s lines are far more understated.

Description

If minivans aren’t your thing and sedans lack sufficient cargo space, the Dodge Journey might be your way to travel. This mid-sized wagon has the interior space that many families require, but at a price that won’t blow up their budgets.
The Journey has been around since the 2009 model year, but it underwent a significant leap forward two years later with an updated interior and a new V6 engine option. The exterior also received a modest refresh (new hood grille, bumper and lights), but the stylists at Dodge still managed to make the already attractive Journey a bit more appealing.

Description

With more than three million sold, this sedan just Cruzes on for 2015. Small cars have been an integral part of Chevrolet’s product mix dating back more than 50 years, although a few have been memorable for the wrong reasons (the Corvair, Vega and Chevette come to mind). With the 2015 Cruze however, Chevrolet nailed it right from the beginning.

Description

Here’s one that Ford got right, right from the beginning. Ford introduced the Explorer for 1991 as a replacement to the ungainly-looking Bronco II. Since then, enthusiastic buyers have been gobbling them up and other automakers have been trying to replicate the success. The current-gen Explorer, introduced for 2011, was a crucial turning point for the brand as it pulled away from its rough and tumble – and thirsty – truck-based roots. The new model drove great, was quiet and looked fantastic.

Description

Road tests in warm sunny climes are generally preferred for winter-weary auto writers. However to experience the full measure of the 2016 Sorento, Kia selected a cold, crisp venue in Canada with plenty of snow- and ice-covered back roads to play on. Uh, thanks, Kia? Staging frigid-venue press events is commonplace for many automakers, particularly when showcasing their vehicles’ all-wheel-drive capabilities.
