What is Auto Edit?

Welcome to AutoEdit, a new and slightly more irreverent weekly feature from Wheelbase Media.
Rather than your pages being a collection of random auto stories, the AutoEdit feature is intended to be the glue that holds it all together. Just as your editorial page is intended to be the pulse of your newspaper, Auto Edit can also be the pulse of your auto pages.

Auto edit runs 500-550 words and is all about your readers becoming more familiar with our key staff members via their personal views on the automotive world. Of all 18 of our weekly features, AutoEdit is the only one intended to provide weekly commentary. Journalistically speaking, this is just common sense since such commentary does not belong in our other news-type features.

Whether your readers agree or disagree with what’s written, they’ll know exactly how the writers of AutoEdit stand on their chosen topics. And, quite frankly, a little spirited debate is a healthy thing and that seems to be missing from more and more newspapers these days. AutoEdit is all about soul, getting back to the basics of solid content and showing readers that there are real people behind the nine-point typeface.

Story Intro

Summer means holiday driving time for many of us. It also means adding to our treasure trove of travel memories and especially the vehicles that whisked us to our destinations. It’s funny that most of us can remember with uncanny accuracy the cars we rode in as kids to the beach, mountains, camping spots, or wherever our parents took us. We might not recall the specifics of the journey, yet we’ll easily recite the year, make, model, trim level, color and smell of the vehicles that would be our temporary home for a week or two.

Story Intro

When I was a kid, I couldn’t wait to get out on the road and travel and visit. So, I was a little puzzled when my sister told me that she had to practically force her son to get his driver’s license. “He says he doesn’t need it.”
What? I was so taken with the idea of getting out and exploring the world that I left home right around my 18th birthday in July of ’83. Off to university with my Plymouth in search of my own life. Don’t need a license? Heck, it was my oxygen.

Story Intro

A friend and fellow auto writer recently put out a story about a kid from his high school days with the unlikely name of Tinky. He was described as being literally and figuratively larger than life and a certified gearhead to boot.
The portrayal of the gregariously oversized Tinky sounded vaguely familiar, as if I had also attended school with him. Only in my case his name was Mike and my school was in a different city.

Story Intro

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Yutaka Katayama, Nissan’s first U.S. president, who grabbed American consumer awareness by introducing the affordable Datsun Z sports car in the early 1970s, died at age 105 on Feb. 19. Known publicly as “Mr. K,” Katayama left his U.S. post 40 years ago and retired from Nissan altogether in 1977.

Story Intro

I’m never thrilled with the thought of driving fast cars on racetracks. Even so, I’ve attended an open-wheel Formula racing school and I’ve driven a NASCAR stock car around the 1.5-mile Kentucky Motor Speedway. On other occasions, I’ve piloted various new vehicles on road courses. Once I’m on course, I become obsessed with speed. The wanna-go-fast switch in my noggin flips on, my eyesight narrows and my right foot turns to cement. Alas, my underwhelming track abilities aren’t pretty, but it’s fun.

Story Intro

Do you believe that the way you drive has a direct impact on fuel consumption? As in not just excessive speed, but foot-to-the-floor acceleration? Of course it does. In many cases the effect is dramatic. We often muse around the office about how automakers toil and spend millions of dollars to get a single extra mile out of a gallon of gas, only for some leadfoot to turn around and blow it by freeway driving at 90 mph.

Story Intro

I recently completed my yearly pilgrimage to the Detroit Auto Show. It’s officially called the North American International Auto Show, but hardly anyone uses that appellation. The display of shiny new vehicles takes place in January within the confines of the Cobo Convention Center and the adjoining Joe Louis Arena. These days, downtown Detroit looks and feels like a crumbling Soviet-era city.

Story Intro

Since President Barak Obama’s pronouncement that the United States and Cuba will move to normalize diplomatic and trade relations, the debate rages between Americans over whether this move is a good one, while the rest of the world wonders what all the fuss is all about. As a Canadian and a car buff who has been to Cuba, I feel badly that my Amercian friends and neighbors are missing out on visiting what is the world’s largest classic-car show.

I’m not much of a winter person and for one big reason: the restriction. As the snow piles up, we’re restricted to streets and sidewalks, like mice in a maze. We’re restricted to the indoors unless we bundle up, and even then we can’t be out too long . . . or we’ll become popsicles of the dead flavor. We have to shovel snow to get the car out, and then shovel our way back in after the plow passes. It’s dark at 5 p.m. and that’s incredibly restrictive.

Story Intro

As a matter of profession and, possibly, child-like reckless abandon, I’ve driven some fast cars. Very fast cars, usually on closed courses where bone-headed mistakes are more easily forgiven if not somewhat expected by the indignant track hands. But Cody Loveland’s text message sent a chill down my spine.
“Just how fast are the ‘fast’ cars you’ve driven, anyway?”
