Description

The proof was in performance: from 1975 to ’84, all National Records in the Top Fuel category were held by cars using Keith Black’s engine blocks. His involvement in developing a clutch that put power to the ground rather than smoking the tires most of the way down the track was paramount. Business would get so good, and word-of-mouth advertising so influential, that Black had to move his operation from its small start to South Gate, Calif., expanding the machine shop and stock parts store, then eventually going national.

Description

If you recall movies of the 1980s, you’ll remember the line that Tom Cruise used in the movie “Risky Business.” “Porsche . . . there is no substitute.” The irony is that to many of the Porsche faithful, the 928 model driven in that movie was itself a substitute and, in hindsight, risky business. The 928 was sleek, sexy and sophisticated and could outperform just about anything on the road. But, with its engine positioned in front of the driver instead of behind, was it a “real” Porsche?

Description

At a base price of nearly $4,000, a four-door Lincoln Capri was more than twice the price of a base-model Ford Custom. Sales for 1955 fell short of 1954 levels, perhaps indicating that focusing on performance instead of luxury features was not necessarily the best marketing approach for the brand. But for those pillars of their communities who wanted proven high-speed capability, the Lincoln’s well-earned reputation was second to none.
