Description

To go with its thoroughly modern look, the rear-wheel-drive car featured advancements such as a semi-independent rear suspension, front disc brakes, adjustable steering column and a complete set of gauges. The Cosmo also delivered spirited performance that matched its sporty good looks. Shifting via a four-speed manual transmission, the car could sprint to 60 mph in less than nine seconds and reach a top speed of about 125 mph. Mazda sold just 343 of its $4,100 Cosmo coupes in the first year, all to customers in Japan.

The Ford F150 turbo-diesel (also a 3.0-liter V-6) delivers 250 horsepower and 440 pound-feet, and GM’s 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder turbo-diesel in the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra has 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet. Yes, the numbers are close, but the Ram holds a definite edge in the crucial torque department.
It’s also a horse race for official fuel economy. GM leads the pack at 27 mpg in combined city/highway driving, followed by Ram at 26 mpg and Ford at 25.

Description

Colin Chapman produced some of the most innovative and ground-breaking sports cars around. Under his guidance, Lotus’s open-wheel Formula machines dominated international motorsports throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Much of the technology developed for competition also trickled down to his specialty sports cars that were produced in limited numbers. But for a man who lived on the cutting edge, it’s doubtful that Chapman, who died of a heart attack at age 54 in 1982, would have let the Esprit model plod on until 2003 . . . for a total of 27 years.
