Description

Start with a drawing: it’s your darned road map.
Everyone who has ever owned an old car knows that it’s never really ever finished. It’s a canvas you just keep adding stuff to and fixing when it needs fixing. There’s no goal, no end point. You put a little money into it when you have some to spare. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this approach. Most hot rods are done exactly this way.

Description

You could decide on a new paint job for your car and be done with it.
And that’s exactly what we were thinking when it came to the not-so-shiny 1963 Corvette coupe we purchased from a sleazy used-car emporium in the Bronx, N.Y.
But then our paint-and-body expert said, “You know, we could do a much better job and it would actually be easier if we took the body off the frame.” Easier. Perhaps in one respect, but when you make this decision, you are entering a hell storm with every other aspect of the car.

One charge, 200 miles?
That’s right, in a debut that could become a game-changer in the electric-vehicle market, Chevrolet unveiled its slick Bolt concept, an all-electric vehicle that parent General Motors says will provide a surprising 200-mile range with a price tag of about $30,000 after federal incentives and credits.

Description

Ford Motor Co. came out of the box with some momentous announcements at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Mich., where the Blue Oval brand stole the early headlines in grand style. The undisputed star of the Detroit Auto Show was the Ford GT, which is mostly made of carbon fiber. However a Shelby GT 350R and a new Raptor SVT pickup truck were nearly as significant and showed that Ford has a lot going on. Where the previous Raptor used a V8, the new model uses as V6 and has an aluminum body.

Description

Perhaps best known for the TV show Overhaulin’, award-winning designer Chip Foose is quite possibly the first of his breed to achieve mass recognition. On the same show, where an unsuspecting owner’s vehicle is made over in a short timeframe, it is also important not to label Foose as the king of the quick hit. In fact, he has created a legacy of rolling automotive art well beyond his 51 years.

Description

OK, so do you remember Fried Green Tomatoes from, like, a thousand years ago? Allow me to refresh you. Kathy Bates plays a middle-aged housewife who is taken for granted by everyone around her. She reaches her breaking point when a pair of young T.A.R.T.s (that would be Trendy, Arrogant, Restless, Twentysomethings, of course) beat her to a parking spot at the grocery store and gloat, “face it lady, we’re younger and faster.”

So we know that stopping is good, and we know that stopping better than anyone else gives us the edge on the street in terms of safety and on the track in terms of performance.
But, we have a curve ball in all this: just because you transplant bigger and better brakes onto your vehicle doesn’t necessarily mean it will stop any better than before.

Description

Pop quiz. What suspension technology found on our Project Plymouth dates back more than a century? Leaf springs no doubt smoothed the blows to the buttocks dealt you by a horse-drawn carriage. And in the early days when “cars” were nothing more than automated carts and carriages, leaf springs were naturally carried forward.
How, exactly, “buggy” springs found their way into the automobile well into the 1990s is anyone’s guess, but the pace of change – or more likely the desire to make change – was slow.
