Topics Covered

Electric BMW sports car coming fast: No sooner did BMW officially reveal its electric i3 city car than it also released some details of its second all-electric, the i8 plug-in sports car. It will feature BMW’s latest-generation three-cylinder turbocharged engine, which is also due to appear eventually in other small BMWs and Mini-brand cars. All of 1.5 liters of displacement, the gasoline engine will develop 321 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, which is the highest per-liter rating of any engine BMW has ever produced for the road, paired with a 131-horsepower electric motor with an additional 184 pound-feet of torque. Weighing not even a ton and a half (3,285 pounds, actually), the i8 is claimed to accelerate to 60 mph in less than 4.5 seconds.
