As it turns out, there was little, if anything, that could stop him. From an early age, the founder of the Bendix Corporation showed the kind of spirit that comes around once every century or so. He was creative, fascinating and he was willing to take a few chances. In fact, Bendix ran away to Manhattan in 1898 at age 16, the scene for many entrepreneurs of the time.

Description

It was 1895 and Henry Ford had just one thing to say to the clerk at the front counter of Columbus Buggy Works in Detroit: “I’m here to see Harvey Firestone.” Ford was using bicycle tires for a car. Firestone had a different idea. “They were pneumatic tires,” Ford later remembered. Harve…

Description

Today, many years after his death in 1992, the Von Dutch name is a fashion brand. And who would have
thought it? Probably not the real Von Dutch—Kenny Howard—who was a pioneer of the 1960s custom-car craze. Born in 1929, he transformed pin-striping into an art form. It all began with his father, who was a professional sign painter.
Howard picked up the craft and by the age of 10 was able to letter and paint like a pro. In the early 1940s, he began working at a motorcycle shop.

Description

Three decades after his death at age 50 in 1980 of lung cancer, the fast-driving McQueen is still larger than life mainly because so few lived it as fast and furious as he did. His impact on the movie and automotive scene can be counted in the number of vehicles he owned — 265 before his estate was auctioned off in 1984 — and the influence he left on both worlds. McQueen was a movie legend, but he was…

Description

It’s 1997 and Craig Breedlove is strapped to the jet engine from a fighter plane and is blasting along at 675 mph . . . in a car.
Actually, the “Spirit of America” doesn’t exactly pass for a car in the traditional sense, but when you’re used to being the fastest human alive — on the ground — practicality and rules are out the window.
