Description

Oldsmobiles used to be easy to spot.
Back in the 1950s, they were far more imposing than the typical Chevy, Ford and Plymouth, with massive grilles and bumpers that looked as though they could bash right through a brick wall and come out the other side completely unharmed, chrome gleaming brighter than ever. The look, the rumbling sound emanating from the exhaust and the aura are what set these cars apart from the crowd.

Description

Officially, the five single-purpose competition machines didn’t exist and all General Motors’ divisions were supposedly adhering to a ban on racing originally agreed to by all North American manufacturers back in 1957.
Behind closed doors, however, GM, Ford and Chrysler conducted various “skunk works” operations that funneled money and engineering expertise to various private racing enterprises. In mid-1962, the first of what would become five special Corvettes, labeled the Grand Sport, began to take shape. Loosely based on the new-for-1963 Sting Ray coupe, each featured a tubular aluminum chassis, extra-thin fiberglass body panels and plexiglass windows.

Description

The Lincoln-Zephyr, a luxury car created to serve the needs of buyers whose economic circumstances had forced them to consider more modest forms of four-wheeled transportation. Edsel Ford, son of Henry Ford, had good reason to be concerned. Back in 1922, he had convinced his father to purchase Lincoln. As head of the division, it was Edsel’s job to bring in the cash, not a simple task considering the stock-market crash in late 1929.

Description

Flying a car to the moon 45 years ago presented certain problems. But building one 45 years ago to actually drive in a zero-oxygen environment with no roads? That was quite another.
As odd as it was, the Lunar Rover was one of the most celebrated modes of personal transportation ever to be built. Description

During the early part of the 1970s, performance cars would be hot, although perhaps not as fast or quick as they were at the peak of the musclecar era in 1970. By the mid-1970s, speed and horsepower would be fond memories.
The second-generation Camaro made its debut early in 1970 (production problems delayed introduction from fall of 1969) with much acclaim from the automotive press. It had a buff new body and an all-new high-performance 1970 1/2 (remember, it was late) Z/28 package.

Big-block V8 power turned this otherwise tame intermediate hauler into a fearsome street fighter capable of beating up on unsuspecting Ford Torinos, Plymouth Road Runners and similar musclecar makes. It’s likely that none of the 250,000 souls arriving at the 17.563-mile NŸrburgring racecourse on a rainy Sunday, June 14, 1936, in Germany had any clue that history was about to be made.
