Description

There’s something rather odd going on at Hyundai these days. It’s name is Veloster and it has three different sized passenger doors. Yes, the 2012 Veloster is an oddity. The lack of portal symmetry certainly sets it apart from virtually anything else on the road, which is exactly what Hyundai’s designers have been striving for lately. When you consider how dramatically different the latest Sonata and Elantra sedans appear from their respective mainstream peers, it was almost a forgone conclusion that shredding the styling envelope would continue. The Veloster, available late this summer, is the slow-to-arrive replacement for the Tiburon sport coupe that was phased out following the 2008 model year. (LAST UPDATED APRIL 2011). By Malcolm Gunn, Wheelbase Media. The AutoPilot feature is a 700-word (the length varies slightly depending on subject) new-vehicle story plus high-resolution artwork, page layout and separate text file for maximum layout flexibility. Specs too! Please note that the .zip files range in size from 20-50 mb.

Description

The days of North Americans being one step behind the rest of the world seem to be coming to an end. It was assumed that we simply weren’t interested in stylish, firm-riding hatchbacks that Europeans were driving, so they were seldom offered here. After all, we liked soft-riding, pudgy cars with spoilers and plastic body cladding, right? We never did, really, but that’s what we got. The upshot was that our Ford Focus was not the same as the European Ford Focus: not even close. But the cost-saving global-design movement is changing the way the game is played and many excellent European models are now showing up. (LAST UPDATED MARCH 2011). By Malcolm Gunn, Wheelbase Media. Description

Chrysler’s tsunami of new and updated models has been nothing short of spectacular. And among the cars requiring urgent attention was the automaker’s Sebring sedan and convertible, which are now referred to as the 200 series. Chrysler’s new Fiat-controlled management group will replace the 200 with an entirely new car in a few years, but for now a new name, fresh sheetmetal and a major engine upgrade will have to suffice. (LAST UPDATED APRIL 2011). By Malcolm Gunn, Wheelbase Media. Description

You might have also noticed the steadily rising pump prices attributed to certain oil-producing-nation strife. This volatility is bad news for drivers of big, thirsty vehicles, but it’s the perfect storm for General Motors which will this fall launch the all-new Sonic series of sub-compacts. The Sonic replaces the Korea-built Aveo that has served as the automaker’s entry model since the 2004 model year. (LAST UPDATED APRIL 2011). By Malcolm Gunn, Wheelbase Media. Description

“Fuel economy” has always brought with it the “economy-car” stigma, but there’s a definite shift going on in 2011: good on gas can also mean a good car. Maybe even a great car. As if Kia was trying to prove the point, buyers now have a highly versatile Forte 5-Door as well as the sedan and two-door “Koup” to choose from. The Korea-based automaker refers to the 5-Door as a hatchback, but there’s little to differentiate it from most typical wagons. Some might argue that the rear opening must be virtually vertical for a wagon to be called a wagon, while others believe the amount of storage space is the ideal determining factor. In any event, if Kia prefers calling the 5-Door (obviously not bothering to differentiate between passenger doors and rear-access cargo openings) a hatchback, then so be it. Description

Once left for dead, the Dodge Durango has made a surprising comeback for 2011 after a two-year absence. Still, it faces an uncertain future as steadily rising fuel costs could derail its return before it really gets off the ground. Chrysler has redesigned or reformulated most of its 2011 product lineup and nowhere is that more evident than in the Durango. The model was considered dead and buried by late 2008, but clearly Dodge had other plans. They include building the big sport ute on a modified Jeep Grand Cherokee platform that is also being employed in the next-generation Mercedes-Benz M-Class. (LAST UPDATED APRIL 2011). Description
Through the Civic, Honda has showed the world that inexpensive, fuel-efficient automobiles could also be fun and desirable. In fact, an original Civic in mint shape will fetch a pretty penny among enthusiasts these days. Additionally, Honda became an early proponent of environmental responsibility and conservation at a time when the Detroit-based ironmongers continued pumping out ever larger and wasteful fleets. With each successive generation, the Civic has stayed mostly true to its original purpose and has reaped the rewards from a growing and loyal customer base. (LAST UPDATED APRIL 2011). Description
The agonizingly long wait for BMW’s compact wagon is nearing an end . . . at least we think it’s nearing an end. The trouble with the X1, as BMW puts it, is that it’s so popular in Europe that the launch here has been delayed – for months now – due to a lack of supply. Luckily, we managed to get our hands on an X1 well in advance of the launch, which is later this year, to give you some answers as to what all the fuss is about. While a close inspection and a test drive reveals a lot about the vehicle, the reason for popularity actually requires nothing more than to understand that the X1 is now the least-expensive BMW wagon in the line at about $35,000, slotted below the $40,000 X3. It just got a lot cheaper to own an all-wheel-drive BMW. (LAST UPDATED MAY 2011). By Malcolm Gunn, Wheelbase Media. Description
“Sleek” and “sporty” are terms that don’t usually describe any Land Rover product, but the upcoming Range Rover Evoque constitutes a major change of course for Britain’s storied off-road brand. Its lack of formality and boxy practicality runs counter to a marque that cut its teeth tearing through the jungles of Botswana and Borneo, roaming the plains of the Serengeti and traversing the blistering Sahara sands. But that’s exactly the point. Many of Land Rover’s steeds spend their lives in urban settings and are rarely, if ever, tested anywhere near the limits of their considerable endurance.
