What is Auto Edit?

Welcome to AutoEdit, a new and slightly more irreverent weekly feature from Wheelbase Media.
Rather than your pages being a collection of random auto stories, the AutoEdit feature is intended to be the glue that holds it all together. Just as your editorial page is intended to be the pulse of your newspaper, Auto Edit can also be the pulse of your auto pages.

Auto edit runs 500-550 words and is all about your readers becoming more familiar with our key staff members via their personal views on the automotive world. Of all 18 of our weekly features, AutoEdit is the only one intended to provide weekly commentary. Journalistically speaking, this is just common sense since such commentary does not belong in our other news-type features.

Whether your readers agree or disagree with what’s written, they’ll know exactly how the writers of AutoEdit stand on their chosen topics. And, quite frankly, a little spirited debate is a healthy thing and that seems to be missing from more and more newspapers these days. AutoEdit is all about soul, getting back to the basics of solid content and showing readers that there are real people behind the nine-point typeface.

Story Intro

Another graduating class is out in the world and my eldest nephew is part of it.
So, my sister and her hubby decided to reward him with an automobile. Not a new one, but the trusty used Hyundai they bought for him to drive when he got his license a couple of years back. Yes, they’re giving it to him now.
He takes knocks for being the most careful – and the slowest – driver who ever lived. He doesn’t take after his uncle, it seems.

Story Intro

It wasn’t easy, but I steadfastly remained in front of the TV, floating teeth and all, to watch NASCAR’s longest race, both in terms of distance traveled and in particular the time needed to complete it.

A whopping five hours and fifteen minutes later, not including an additional hour of incessant pre- and post-race babble, my mind was mush, my back ached from too much sitting and my bladder cried for mercy.

Yes, this is my final Coca Cola 600 race, and quite possibly the last complete NASCAR race I’ll watch unless some drastic – and I do mean drastic – changes come about to make me happy. To that end, I humbly offer a few suggestions, some more comedic than others, to take away some of the pain…

Story Intro

The life of an automobile journalist has evolved along with the relentless quality improvements that have taken place over the years.
I should know. I owned a 1971 Ford Pinto and 1982 Ford Escort. Ouch. Along with cars such as the Chevy Vega and Chevette, I would regard them as quite possibly the worst cars, ever.

Story Intro

Most every sport has been the backdrop for a movie. “Field of Dreams”, “The Natural”, “Knute Rockne”, “The Longest Yard” and hockey’s most memorable “Slap Shot” (who can ever forget the hilarious Hanson Brothers).

But films made with a racing theme, whether depicted on the track or the street, generally don’t work out that well. Of the good ones, Steve McQueen’s “Le Mans” (1971) ranks highly as the most realistic from an action perspective, with “Grand Prix” (1966), featuring the great James Garner, is a close second. “Bullitt” (1968), also starring McQueen, features one of the most exciting street-chase scenes ever, and ranks just ahead of the final 15-minute fling in “Gone in 60 Seconds” (2000).

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been kind of hoping that all this new battery technology used in hybrid cars and electrics would find its way into other things, like, ohhh, I dunno, batteries, perhaps. All kinds of batteries. Big ones, small ones, rechargeable ones that just have to look at a wall plug the right way to get all happy and juiced up.

But nothing. Well, nothing that really affects me at this very moment. Lithium-ion, where are you? You would be my best friend right now, all lightweight and spry.

Story Intro

Most of us vividly remember the first car we owned or learned to drive.

We’re likely not as clear about the vehicle that our parents used to bring us home from the hospital, or the first car we recall riding in as a child. For that we have to rely on photographic evidence tucked away in an old album.

Car shows generate many an epiphany, too. Other than the obvious oohs and aahs from viewing retina-searing levels of chrome and sharp fins, much car-show chatter involves recollections along the lines of, “my parents used to own one of these!”

Story Intro

In a day and age when saving vehicle weight is everything, I think I’ve found five easy pounds to lose. More precisely, 5.14.
Yup, the owners manual in this Lexus ES350 tips the scales at 5.14 pounds, according to the food scale in my kitchen. Translated into meat, that would feed a family of 12. I can only imagine the design and production work to get this thing out the door, not mention the size of the forklift needed to carry them all to their waiting cars.

The compilation of booklets – the manual is like a volume of mini encyclopedias, really – is impressively massive. Too bad most people will only dive in when they can’t figure something out, like how to open the filler cap to put gas in the first time. And if there’s a grain of truth to urban legend, men don’t use instructions of any sort, anyway, strictly out of principle, so there’s no need for manuals in at least half the cars out there.

Story Intro

The recent announcement that Suzuki Canada will follow its U.S. counterpart and cease automotive operations by 2015 was no surprise, given how few vehicles it sold there.

Still, Cecil Hughes seems shocked when I give him the news. Cecil works as a chauffeur in Antigua and Barbuda, two picturesque Caribbean points of land that are part of the West Indies’ Leeward Island chain. I’m spending time riding along with Cecil as we explore a fair chunk Antigua in his new Suzuki APV.

It was sort of a horrifying ritual when I was growing up. Vehicles weren’t particularly durable, or very good in the first place, which meant that if you wanted to make a car that you liked actually last, you pulled it off the road and resorted to the “winter beater.”…
