What is Auto Edit?

Welcome to AutoEdit, a new and slightly more irreverent weekly feature from Wheelbase Media.
Rather than your pages being a collection of random auto stories, the AutoEdit feature is intended to be the glue that holds it all together. Just as your editorial page is intended to be the pulse of your newspaper, Auto Edit can also be the pulse of your auto pages.

Auto edit runs 500-550 words and is all about your readers becoming more familiar with our key staff members via their personal views on the automotive world. Of all 18 of our weekly features, AutoEdit is the only one intended to provide weekly commentary. Journalistically speaking, this is just common sense since such commentary does not belong in our other news-type features.

Whether your readers agree or disagree with what’s written, they’ll know exactly how the writers of AutoEdit stand on their chosen topics. And, quite frankly, a little spirited debate is a healthy thing and that seems to be missing from more and more newspapers these days. AutoEdit is all about soul, getting back to the basics of solid content and showing readers that there are real people behind the nine-point typeface.

Story Intro

A friend and I recently listed all of the vehicles that we’ve owned from the time we were teenagers right up to the present day, which for both of us stretches some four-and-a-half decades.

It’s the end of an era and one that I’m grateful is over and done with. I’m not talking about the disco era, but one that is just as annoying: the Era of Having to Tinker with your Car.

The other day I was explaining to a friend that the new Infiniti Q50 sedan is replacing the G37. At the same time, I was trying to describe how all of Infiniti’s models are getting new names for 2014.

Many functions of the modern automobile are controlled by a computer. The fuel injection and ignitions systems are the most famous, but over the last few years “shift by wire” and “throttle by wire” have become more common.

Back in the 1970s, my buddy John and I made a trip to Morocco. As you can imagine, it was quite the Third World adventure for a couple of North American kids. This was long before I became an automotive scribe, but I did write about the adventure with hopes of one day having it published. Today’s the day.

OK, when you look at a box of munchies on the shelf at the corner store that reads “low fat,” you have to be a special kind of gullible to twist the meaning into “this is healthy for me.”

Low fat – whatever that means – or otherwise, it’s still a box of processed-food munchies with zero food value. “Low fat” is really a label to make you feel less guilty about buying munchies in the first place, which keeps you coming back for more munchies. That’s how marketing works.

Story Intro

Ivan Sentch is turning the stuff of automotive dreams into reality using newly available technology that creates parts and pieces out of thin air.
I feel as though I’ve just crossed into the Twilight Zone, or whatever zone you arrive in when confounded by something that stretches credulity beyond the unfathomable. Assuming this isn’t some early (or late) April Fools prank or Internet scam, I’ve just read in Autoweek Magazine where a New Zealander named Ivan Sentch is printing his own 1958 Aston Martin DB4. Notice that I wrote “printing” and not “building” or “restoring”. On the surface, printing sounds ridiculous, but Mr. Sentch is being assisted in his project by a Solidoddle 3D printer.

Story Intro

“I have some tools in my van if you need them.”
Susan was heading over to see what was up with my stranded 1955 Chevrolet Two-Ten.
My beloved old crock, nicknamed Shrek because of its ogre-green color and sheer bulk, had been running great all day until it abruptly sputtered and died at the side of the road. My suspicion was that I had run it out of fuel, but since the gas gauge wasn’t working I couldn’t tell for sure.

Everyone remembers their very first car, but a true enthusiast remembers them all, good, bad or indifferent.
My beloved 1955 Chevrolet, nicely broken-in by the fall of 1968, was my first love and remained so for three years, before I fell hard for a 1962 Volvo PV544.
That particular Swede was a popular import choice in my city, particularly among the college crowd. Its retro 1940s Ford styling look cool and the 544’s 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and bulletproof four-speed manual gearbox made it fun and reliable.

Like many people, I have become a slave to the navigation screen, but it took a 10-day road trip to bang some common sense back into my head.
That was after trusting the nav system to get me where I wanted to go. A map? Hey, who needs one when we have all this great technology right there in front of us?
After wrestling for a bit with the functionality and trying to understand the system’s terminology, I was off, staring at the scenery, while every now and then glancing down at the arrow moving down a big orange line on the screen. Turn here, stop there. Merge left, stay right, merge some more and keep going. Turn again, stop, stay left, turn right and, voila, I have arrived at my destination.
