Description

When the smoke finally cleared, nothing was left but a charred Lincoln chassis and the memories of what could have been.

The love child of legendary rocker Neil Young, LincVolt – a 1959 Lincoln Continental and the object of Young’s affection – was a mess of singed scrap after a fire in November of 2010 rolled through its storage warehouse in San Francisco.

Use: Voted the best automotive news column available: you need it.

What it is: If you could have only one automotive feature, this should be it. Our worldly gumshoe has his ear to the ground, digging up the latest news on everything from product launches and updates to names in the news. The column is solely driven by reader interest. No boring statistics or auto-company pap here, just the straight goods peppered with the Auto Sleuth’s commentary and speculative, gossipy-style.

Description

Now new the 2014 Kia Sorento really is depends on how you look at it, or more correctly, where you look at it.

Kia’s current design renaissance encompasses the street-wise Soul and Sportage wagons as well as the Optima and Rio sedans. You can also place the current-generation Sorento that was launched for 2011 on that list. The lines are so right on the money in terms of contemporary style and carrying capacity that there was obviously no point in monkeying around with the mid-sized wagon’s looks.

Description

What the heck is a W-30? A silicone lubricant that comes in a blue can? A special tax form for “other income”? Perhaps a new golf club claiming to straighten out your game?

Well, as far as deep and dark automotive secrets go, few were any deeper or darker than Oldsmobile’s W-30.
It was so secret, in fact, that most of the company’s dealers weren’t even aware it existed.

Description

The lines were long for the man. Boy, were they ever long.
If you walked along the grounds of the dusty county fair, glitzy car show or dirty drag strips that dotted the landscape of Southern California in the late 1950s, one thing became abundantly clear: people were waiting for someone. “A phenomena,” the man at the front of every line once called it. Who was that man? And who were so many people waiting for? Even Ed Roth couldn’t answer the question.

Description

Three decades after his death at age 50 in 1980 of lung cancer, the fast-driving McQueen is still larger than life mainly because so few lived it as fast and furious as he did. His impact on the movie and automotive scene can be counted in the number of vehicles he owned — 265 before his estate was auctioned off in 1984 — and the influence he left on both worlds. Description

Ask anyone.
Spending money on a new exhaust system is mostly about the sound. If you pick up a bit of extra power, that’s just a bonus.

But it’s also risky business for buyers with hundreds of dollars or maybe even $1,000-$1,500 on the line.
It took 2007 Mustang GT owner Gilles Belliveau months to make up his mind and all the usual questions came into play. The most important, even ahead of price: will it have the right sound?
