Back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the ubiquitous Volkswagen Beetle had two primary claims to fame: it was frugal and it was slow.
But there were some upsides. Cheap to buy, cheap and easy to work on, and parsimonious with a gallon of fuel, the Beetle was about as thrifty a car as there was in its day.
