S-Class goes hybrid times four: The third hybrid version of the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the S500 Plug-In Hybrid (likely to be called the S550 Hybrid when it reaches North America), will mate an electric motor with externally rechargeable battery to a new 3.0-liter V6 turbocharged engine. Mercedes says it will return the equivalent of an astounding 78 miles per US gallon and up to 18 miles of range on electric power only. Four operating modes can be selected at the touch of a button: Hybrid: engine and battery; E-Mode: electric power only; E-Save: fully-charged battery is reserved for driving on electric power only later; and Charge: battery is charged while driving.
