Description

His biography, reads like a novel: loss; love; success; war; and death. Born on Jan. 10, 1903, in northern Italy, Flaminio Bertoni discovered car design by accident. After his father’s death in 1918, Bertoni was forced to leave technical school to earn a living and support his family. Already a skilled draftsman, he found a job in the planning department at Carrozzeria Macchi, a local body maker. In his spare time, Bertoni studied sculpture and even opened his own art shop.

He seemed destined for automotive design. Harley Earl’s father was a coachmaker who formed Earl Automobiles in 1908 and began making customized parts and accessories for cars. Harley, born in 1893 in Los Angeles, Calif., attended university but returned home before completing his engineering studies to focus on styling. By the time he was 25, Earl was creating custom auto bodies for most of Hollywood’s elite. His trademark was the outrageous and adventurous.

Born on the family farm near Kilmany, Scotland, Clark was the youngest child and the only boy among five children. Even at an early age, he showed amazing mastery behind the wheel of a racing car. His first competitive win came in 1957, at age 21, in a friend’s Porsche.

It’s a company that has so far survived more than 100 years building automobiles. In 1899, Italian Giovanni Agnelli signed a contract with Emanuele Bricherasio di Cacherano, a nobleman from Turin, Italy, who was looking for investors and partners in a company called “Societa Anonima Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino,” or Fiat. The first factory opened in 1900 with nearly 200 workers. Agnelli stood out in the group of investors and won recognition for his determination and strategic vision.

He has been called the “Flying Finn,” the “Iceman” and “Mika the Magnificent.” As the most successful Finnish driver in Formula One history, and with 20 wins, Hakkinen was a quiet man on a circuit full of flash. Born on Sept. 28th, 1968 near Helsinki, he began racing go-karts when he was 5. Within three years, he was a karting champion. In 1991, after more than a decade working his way up, Hakkinen jumped from formula 3000, the minor leagues of open-wheel racing, to F1.

Description

Created from a need for economical transportation during the gas-rationing period of the 1950’s, the Mini was an overnight hit. Originally part of the Morris Motors stable, the Mini lost the “Morris” designation when the company merged with British Motors Corporation (BMC). Designed by Alec Issigonis, it was the first front-wheel-drive car with transversely (sideways) mounted engine.

Description

Jackie Stewart is one of the few racing heroes of the 1960’s who made just as big a name for himself after he hung up his helmet. Formula in the 1950’s and ’60s was incredibly dangerous since driver safety was really an afterthought. Involved in a crash in 1966, Stewart’s experience convinced him of the need to make racing safer, beginning with the proper emergency equipment at the tracks, which soon became a crusade for the young Scot.

Description

Born in 1866 to a family of hard-working farmers, Herbert Austin kept the machines humming at the Wolseley Sheep Shearing Company in England. In his spare time, however, he built an experimental three-wheeled car with a two-cylinder engine. By 1900, his three-horsepower, single-cylinder two-seat carriage could travel 100 miles without stopping. He founded the Austin Motor Company in 1905 and received his first orders at the 1905 London Motor Show.
